Land which you cannot currently access, as designated by the red box at the top of your screen, reading: “Permission to Hunt Required” needs to be opened up to become available to hunt in.

This area is as such considered ‘private land’ you do not currently have access to as a hunter. Here’s how private land works in Way of the Hunter and how to gain access to it – there are two primary ways.

Private Land in Way of the Hunter: How to Gain Access

You need permission to hunt on this land from the ‘landowner.’

One way to go about obtaining access is through cabins located throughout the map. Inside these cabins, you’ll find a variety of ‘missions’ available to you, which you can embark on in order to gain access to the region for hunting.

You’ll notice upon entering the cabins, that there is a ‘note’ on the table left by the landowner. You can then do these missions to effectively ‘gain approval from the landowners to hunt on their property.

An alternative to this is simply going to the ‘Shop’ tab – scroll all the way across to the section marked “Boundaries” and you can purchase access to the corresponding areas. They sell these ‘passes’ for each of the areas of the map that require permission: there are 4 for each map, and they cost 4,500 credits each to purchase.

You can still do and complete the missions even if you do choose to purchase them from the store – it ultimately depends on which way you’d like to approach playing and advancing in the game. If you purchase these passes, it seems to permanently enable the area for you, so will no longer need to have access granted.

The missions, should you decide to take them instead, call for you to specifically hunt a certain animal in a certain way, such as killing a deer through the lungs and the lungs alone.

Another cool feature of the game is that even if you do not have the mission enabled through the cabin, by completing the assigned task randomly, you’ll notice the option for the reward of the mission pop-up before you sell or tax the animal to apply it to completing the mission.

You may then need to place the ‘sample’ of the target – be it deer, or otherwise, at a specific location (depending on the mission). A landowner may require you to complete multiple missions or tasks before you are able to be granted access to the region. Some may also not be strictly hunting missions. Once you’ve completed all the tasks for a specific landowner, this will enable you access to that region permanently.
