Assassin’s Creed Shadows, like all of the other Ubisoft RPG style games they have been releasing in recent years, features a lot of optional content that you can discover and complete for various rewards. Kofuns are one of them in this latest entry to the series, and in this guide, we will be showing you where to find them and how you can reach the treasures hidden in them.

All Kofun Locations & Solutions

There are various kofuns to discover and loot in the game, and some of them area part of the story. As such, there is at least one entry that the game will just guide you through without any need for outside help. With that in mind, here are the other kofuns you can go through.

Kofuns Near Izumi Settsu – Three Kofuns | Yasuke

Near the Izumi Settsu region are three different kofuns. In order to find them, refer to the map image below to see the exact spots that you need to travel to. Pick one of the three to start with so you can start with your looting run.

There will be various red explosive vases in these kofuns that you will have to use in order to go through doorways blocked by wood and stone rubble. They will also have some wooden shelves to help you reach some of these doorways, but all you need to do for those is pull them out in the open to give yourself a surface to jump on.

  • Makino Kurumazuka Kofun – This location has a legendary chest that you can loot. Outside is a red explosive vase that you can use to break into the kofun. There will be more red vases inside to help you go through the paths blocked by rubble, and it is fairly straightforward.
  • Takagi Kofun – This kofun has a lot of crawlspaces that you need to go through, and there may be a few really weak enemies to deal with inside. Just like all the others, look for the rubble walls and blow them up with vases until you reach the end.
  • Megalithic Vault – Just like the other kofuns, you will be met with tight hallways and some wooden panels to move around to allow for some parkour. Take note of a hole in the wall beside a chest, as you will need to shoot a red vase in it to reach the legendary chest past the room full of statues.

Kofuns In Yamashiro & Tamba – Two Kofuns (One Each) | Naoe

There is one kofun in both Tamba and Yamashiro, which are two neighboring regions. Check the map image below to see where you have to go for both of them. Proceed to either of them to start your search.

  • Chasuriyama Kofun (Tamba) – Just swing and climb your way to the very end of the cave, which is essentially just a long hallway full of parkouring. At the end, you will find the legendary chest after a long flight of stairs.
  • Ancient Tomb of Nanjo (Yamashiro) – Take a leap of faith into the water down below to start your search. Once you reach an open area overlooked by two horse statues, you will want to go to the north and keep following the path in that direction. There will be a lot of lesser chests along the way to the legendary one.

Kofuns Near the Omi Region – One Kofun | Yasuke

Near the Omi region of the map is one kofun that will require you to play as Yasuke to clear. Refer to the map below in order to see where it is between Omi and Iga.

The Azuchi Hyotanyama Kofun is a fairly straightforward kofun with a few weak enemies that you will need to get rid of as you progress through it. Near the end, where you have to form a parkour bridge using the wooden shelves, there will be a red vase on the ground near the doorway.

Grab the red vase and throw it at the rubble at the opposite end of the chamber. This will lead you to the room containing the legendary chest, though be wary of the few guards stationed there.

Kofuns In Wakasa – One Kofun | Naoe

Near the previous one, you will find one kofun within the Wakasa region. Again, refer to the map image below to see where the exact location is. There, you will have to use Naoe to get through the cave.

There, it is another straightforward cave that you just need to run through. Along the way, there will be a bunch of enemies to clear, though they should not pose any threat to you at this point.

The only thing to note here is to watch out for red vases behind holes in the wall. If you ever get blocked by the environment, just look around and you will find an explosive vase to trigger and open the way forward. At the end of the cave, you will find a legendary chest with some guards nearby.

Kofuns In the Yamato Region – One Kofun | Naoe

In the Yamato region, there are technically two kofuns, but we already covered one at the start (the Megalithic Vault) as it made more sense due to the character requirement. Here, you will find the Ishibutai Kofun at the marked spot of the map image below.

The Ishibutai Kofun is very easy to find due to its distinct spot in the map. This one is fairly straightforward, as it just involves a whole lot of swinging as you progress towards the end of the long cave.

At the end, you will eventually climb into a chamber that contains the legendary chest of this cave. Go ahead and open it to claim a new legendary trinket.

Kofuns In the Kii Region – One Kofun | Yasuke

Finally, you have one kofun within the Kii region, which will require you to play as Yasuke. This can be found in the southeastern corner, highlighted in the map image below if you need an exact location.

Once you enter the kofun, the important thing to note is that you need to dive into the water in the first chamber, as the way forward is actually down there. From that point on, you just need to pull more wooden shelves and blow up red vases at blocked doorways or through holes in the wall.

Eventually, you will reach a pit with water down below and a room up ahead that you cannot reach by jumping. Dive into the water and go to the east, through the doorway that leads to a new spot.

If you want, you can go straight below first and resurface at a place that will lead you to the room past the pit, which has a chest with an epic item in it.

When you resurface, you will find another red vase near some rubble. Open the way through and pull the wooden shelf out so you can climb to the chamber above. There, you will find the legendary chest containing a new naginata.

ACS correct directions to the chest

And those are all of the kofuns in the game at the moment, minus the one that Naoe goes to as a part of the story, as you do not really need any directions or a guide for that one. With this knowledge, you can now find the kofuns and grab all of the free loot hidden inside.

While you are here, consider checking out our guide on how the scouts in Assassin’s Creed Shadows work. This is taught to you very early in the story, but in case you were not paying attention or just completely forgot for some reason, this should help you make full use of them throughout the game!

Franco is a writer and avid gamer who spends a lot of his free time looking for the next obscure indie roguelike to add to his collection. If he’s not busy working or writing on his personal blog, there’s also a non-zero chance that you stumble into him in pretty much any multiplayer game that has SEA or OCE servers. He’s pretty good at anything unless it’s a fighting game, in which case you’d probably body him.
