Smoother graphics for smoother gameplay!

The newly released arena shooter from Ubisoft is the perfect game for competitive players. XDefiant, as with other titles in the genre, is a game of battle, teamwork, and strategy, and benefits from having the best setup for playing. Unsurprisingly, this includes having the best monitor.

In a first-person shooter like XDefiant, the fastest frame rate may as well be a tactical advantage. To avoid choppy graphics and potentially fatal lag, we’ll be explaining how to enable 120 Hz on your PS5 or Xbox.

How to Enable 120 Hz

First, no matter your console of choice, it’s important to make sure you are using a TV or monitor which supports 120 Hz. If you’re unsure, check either in your monitor’s settings or with the manufacturer. It’s also a good idea to use an HDMI 2.1 cable as these allow for faster frame rates. The HDMI cable which came with your console should be the right one!

Enable 120 Hz on PS5

For the PS5, you need to start on the home screen and then go to Settings. From here, scroll down to Saved Data and Game/App Settings and across to Game Presets. In the section Performance Mode or Resolution Mode, make sure to turn on Performance Mode. This will allow for faster frame rates!

Now, go back out to the main Settings screen, and up to Screen and Video. In the first section, Video Output, head over to where it says 120 Hz Output, click on it, and choose Automatic.

Enable 120 Hz on Xbox Series X/S

Whether you use the Series X or the Series S, the steps are the same. First, from your home screen, access the Settings. In General, jump across to TV & Display Options. You should see an option to change resolution, but nothing for refresh rate – let’s change that!

Head over to Video fidelity & overscan, and in the Display section, click Overrides, and change it to HDMI. A message should pop up about overriding your TV Settings, so select Use Manual Settings. Immediately, you’ll notice your graphics looking terrible, but don’t panic!

Xbox Series X Series S Settings 120 Hz Refresh Rate

Going back to the main TV & Display Options screen, in Display, you’ll now notice an option to change the refresh rate. Before you do that, though, make sure to change your Resolution to whichever your TV or monitor supports. On the pop-up, click to Keep the current resolution, and then breathe a sigh of relief that your graphics are back to normal.

Now, you’re free to go down to Refresh Rate and turn on 120 Hz.

Enable 120 Hz on XDefiant

To find out if your steps have worked, load into XDefiant and go into the game’s Settings. Where previously the option to turn on 120 Hz would’ve been locked, it should now allow you to change it.

If it’s still locked, however, retrace your steps into your console’s Settings, and either lower the Resolution of your TV or monitor, or turn off HDR.
