Methods for Stealing Without Getting Caught in Starfield

There are two notable methods for stealing pretty much anything that isn’t bolted down and not getting caught.

The first method is the more honest one. Well, as honest as stealing can be anyway! To use this method, you’ll need to get the Manipulation perk. Yup, you’ll be using mind control for stealing.

The second, much craftier method, is borderline an exploit of the game’s mechanics. It might get patched out, but the community is loving it for now: the trash can method!

It’s up to you which method you end up using, but we’ll be detailing both of them next!

One word of warning first, though: save your game before attempting to steal. Just in case, you will be able to reload if you get caught.

Mind Control Method

This method requires high-tier Social perk, Manipulation. It’s not easy to get through the skill tree, but it can be earned as a reward during the Ryujin quest line.

Once you’ve acquired Manipulation, just go to the place where you wish to steal. We’ll be using Antonio Bianchi’s shop in New Atlantis as our example.

Now, open your radar and target the shopkeeper. Use Manipulation on them, and then lead them to some far-away place. The further away the better!

However, do keep in mind that Manipulation’s chance to work depends on your level.

Either way, the manipulated NPC will go wherever you sent them off to and be distracted for some time. Now’s your chance!

Just in case, we recommend that you crouch down to activate stealth. Then just start looting the place clean, but be mindful of the manipulated NPC eventually coming back. Keep an eye out for any other NPCs, as well!

Nonetheless, this is an easy method and should always work without issues. It’ll be even more effective as you increase your level and upgrade the Manipulation skill, too!

Trash Can Method

This method is, as previously stated, more or less an exploit. But it’s extremely amusing and quite effective, so we hope it’s never patched out!

Also, note that it doesn’t really require a trash can specifically. Any large solid item will do the trick, it just so happens that trash cans are the easiest to get a hold of.

Anyway, let’s detail this crafty method! First of all, locate a trash can or similar object out in the open.

Crouch to go into stealth and make sure no one is seeing you, then pick up the trash can or whatever other object you found. We’ll just go with a trash can ourselves.

With your trusty crime partner in hand, go to the shop or place you want to loot. All of this while you’re carrying the trash can, of course.

Now, just use the trash can to knock around the items you want to steal.

Keep pushing the can against the items and lead them to a place where no NPCs are, such as a backroom.

Effectively, you can steal basically anything as long as you just push it out of every NPC’s sight! When you and the items are alone in a room, just start picking them all up and filling your inventory up.

It’s a time-consuming process compared to the mind control method, but it’s extremely amusing. Plus, it requires absolutely no investment in skills or quests!
