During your playthrough in Project Zomboid, you will eventually come to a point where the power grid suddenly turns off. During this time, any electrical device you have in your base will stop running.

This is where a generator comes in handy. With a generator, you can maintain power in your base for as long as possible, provided that you regularly fill it up with fuel.

Here’s how you can do so.

First off, you need to find a generator. Unfortunately, there’s no way to craft one in the game. Instead, you need to go out into the world to test your luck in finding one.

In most cases, you’ll be able to find a generator inside warehouses or even in tool sheds inside some houses.

Be careful when carrying one, however, as you’ll be carrying it with both hands. This means you won’t be able to fend off any zombie while doing so. Your movement speed is also drastically reduced.

If you have a car, you can just drop it inside the trunk.

Once you have secured a generator in your base, the next step is to place it on an outdoor spot but not far from your base. You don’t want to place it inside as its fumes can reduce your health.

The ideal location would be your rooftop.

Then, connect it to your base. But to do that, you should first look for the How to Use Generators manual and learn it.

Once connected, you will then need fuel which you can obtain from gas cans, cars, and gasoline stations.

With a gas can in hand, all you have to do is right-click on the generator and choose the “Add Fuel” option. If you go into Generator Info, you’ll see the current fuel level on the generator.

One important thing you have to keep in mind when operating a generator is that it will lose durability every day.

As soon as it reaches 20%, it will either catch fire or explode. You want to prevent any of those from happening.

Luckily, you can just repair it using Electronics Scrap by right-clicking the generator and choosing the Repair Generator option.
