If there’s one thing that you should secure during a zombie apocalypse, that would be food. After all, the streets are littered with zombies who are after your brain, so scavenging for food can be really dangerous.

This is particularly true in Project Zomboid. Luckily, there’s one way to ensure you won’t run out of food, and that’s by making your own farm.

This guide will show you how to do it.

Project Zomboid has a skill called Farming which, as the name implies, allows you to farm plants and come up with a sustainable means of gaining food.

As you successfully harvest a crop, you will gain XP that will help level up your Farming skill. And the higher your Farming skill is, the more perks will become available to you.

These perks come in the form of useful information on any crop that you plant. So instead of relying on visual cues to check a plant’s status, it will show up on your screen.

With that out of the way, here’s how you can actually start farming.

To start, you’ll need a shovel, trowel, seeds, and a water container. Once you have all four, you should then look for a suitable spot for your farm.

As much as possible, pick a spot that’s not accessible to zombies. Otherwise, they will trample your crops and prevent them from growing.

You then have to prepare the dirt tiles where you’ll be planting your seeds. You can do this by taking a sack and filling it with dirt. Then, simply dump the dirt on your dirt tile.

After that, plow the tile using your trowel by selecting a tile. This will cause three lines to appear on the ground. Then, you can start planting the seeds by simply right-clicking on a tile and choosing the “Sow Seed” option.

You should also water your newly planted seeds right away until the water level is full. At this point, all you have to do is wait for the plants to grow which can take a long time.

Once your crops are fully grown and ready for harvesting, you can just click on them to prompt your character to gather any harvestable crop. Just repeat the process to have a steady food supply.

Do take note that crops can sometimes suffer from diseases. In this case, you’ll need an insecticide or mildew spray to prevent the disease from worsening.
