Honkai Star Rail: How to Get Free Characters

Just like Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail uses the same mechanic where you collect characters that you will add to your party.

As of right now, there are a total of 27 playable characters in the game.

However, the majority of them aren’t available for free. In fact, only around 8 of them can actually be obtained for free. That said, you can still make good use of them if you plan on playing F2P.

But how exactly do you obtain those free characters? Let’s find out.

How to Get Free Characters in Honkai: Star Rail

As mentioned, there are only 8 characters in the game that you can obtain for free. They’re as follows:

• Asta
• Dan Heng
• Herta
• March 7th
• Natasha
• Serval
• Trailblazer
• Qingque

Most of them are 4-star characters with the exception of Trailblazer who’s the only 5-star character you can get for free.

That said, most of them are well worth the investment and can even carry you all the way to the endgame.

Obtaining Characters Based on Your Progress

You will be able to obtain all of them through the different stages of the game’s story. The first character you can obtain is the Trailblazer as he/she is the character you start the game with.

This character comes in both male and female versions as well as Physical and Fire variants. For a starting character, the Trailblazer is actually quite strong and worth the investment, and you can even use it all the way to the endgame.

Next, you will be able to unlock March 7th shortly after starting the game’s story. She’s an ice-based character who uses ice-based attacks to freeze enemies and create damage-absorbing ice shields.

Alongside March 7th, you will also unlock Dan Heng almost at the same time. He’s a single-target DPS who uses wind-based attacks to take down enemies and also buff him up for more damage.

Next comes Asta who’s a guaranteed reward from the gacha-pulling tutorial of the game. She’s a fire-based character who specializes in dealing massive AOE damage.

After that comes Serval, a lightning-based character that you can claim from your mailbox.

Serval is then followed by Natasha who you can unlock once you arrive at the Jarilo-VI story. She’s a healer that you must definitely include in your lineup.

Next comes Herta who you unlock after you clear World 2 of the Simulated Universe. She also specializes in ice and is capable of attacking multiple targets at once.

Finally, we have Qingque, a quantum-based character who you unlock once you have completed Memory Stage 3 of Forgotten Hall.
