So you have finally reached the endgame in Path of Exile 2 and noticed that some rings and amulets have a little bit of quality on them. That tiny number is actually a massive boost to specific stats on that piece of gear. The item responsible for it is a Catalyst, and it is exclusive to the Breach mechanic.

Things changed a bit in patch 0.5. Catalysts are still tied to the Breach mechanic, but the main way to get them now is through the Genesis Tree crafting system. You can still get them from Breach monsters here and there, but consistent farming comes from the Genesis Tree. In this guide, I will break down how the Genesis Tree works and the best way to use it to get the Catalysts you need.

How to Efficiently Farm Catalyst

The best way to farm Catalysts in Patch 0.5 is through the Genesis Tree system, but before you can start printing Catalysts consistently, you need to farm two key resources from Breaches: Hiveblood and Wombgifts.

For Catalyst farming specifically, you’re mainly looking for Lavish Wombgifts, since they’re tied to the currency branch of the Genesis Tree and can be specialized into Catalyst rewards through the tree’s passive nodes.

To find Breaches efficiently, open your World Map and use the search bar in the top-left corner. Type “Breach”, and the game will highlight all maps that contain Breach encounters. This makes it much easier to chain-farm the mechanic instead of randomly searching for it.

Example of an area containing Breaches.

Once you enter a map with a Breach, look for the glowing Breach rift. When you activate it, the encounter begins and waves of enemies will start pouring out. Your goal is to kill enemies as quickly as possible to keep the Breach active and push it into its stabilized phase.

A Breach rift.

As you fight, you’ll see the Breach progress at the bottom of your screen. If you maintain enough momentum and fill the bar, the Breach stabilizes and begins spawning much stronger Hiveborn enemies. These enemies are significantly more dangerous, but they’re also the main source of Hiveblood and some of the best Breach rewards.

After clearing the stabilized Breach, you’ll receive various rewards, including different types of Wombgifts. Hiveborn enemies can also drop the Hiveblood required to power the Genesis Tree.

The more Breaches you run, the more Hiveblood and Wombgifts you’ll accumulate, creating a steady farming loop. Lavish Wombgifts are particularly valuable if your goal is Catalyst farming, so keep an eye out for them whenever you’re running Breach content.

The Genesis Tree System

Once you’ve built up a good supply of Hiveblood and Wombgifts, head over to the Genesis Tree. You can access it through the Monastery of the Keepers on the World Map. After teleporting there, move to the right side of the area and you’ll quickly spot the massive Genesis Tree.

The Genesis Tree is the centerpiece of the entire Breach crafting system. You insert Wombgifts into its branches and spend Hiveblood to “birth” rewards from them. What makes the system powerful is that you can customize the outcomes through passive nodes on the tree. Instead of relying entirely on RNG, you can shape your rewards toward specific goals such as jewelry, belts, currencies, or Catalysts.

For Catalyst farming, focus on the Currency branch of the Genesis Tree. Several nodes in this section improve Catalyst outcomes, but the most important one is “Complete Refinement“.

This notable allows the tree to birth only Catalysts, removing unwanted outcomes and making your farming strategy far more efficient. Once you allocate the surrounding Catalyst-focused nodes, you’ll dramatically increase the consistency of your returns and turn Lavish Wombgifts into a reliable source of Catalyst generation.

The Catalyst nodes are located on the left side of the Genesis Tree, as shown in the image below. Allocate your points there as early as possible if Catalyst farming is your primary goal, since these nodes have the biggest impact on both efficiency and profit.

The Genesis Tree.

That’s It

That wraps up everything you need to know about Catalyst farming in Patch 0.5. Once you have your Genesis Tree set up and a steady supply of Hiveblood and Lavish Wombgifts, you’ll be able to generate Catalysts much more consistently and make the most out of the Breach system.

To make your farming experience even smoother, you’ll also want a proper Loot Filter. Check out my guide on importing Loot Filters and Build files in Path of Exile 2, where I cover the entire process step by step so you can spend less time configuring and more time farming.
