The Sailing skill update for Old School RuneScape (OSRS) allows you to build and customize your own boat to sail with.

However, it can be a bit confusing to figure out where to get started with this! There are also a lot of different parts and new materials to keep track of…

In this quick guide, we’ll tell you everything you need to build and customize your boat with ease.

To get started with Shipbuilding, just talk to any Shipwright at any dock. For example, Junior Jim in Pandemonium. Then, select Customise Boat to teleport into the building mode area.

Boat Schematics | Old School RuneScape

Once in there, look for a bulletin board near you and interact with it. It will allow you to modify your boat’s schematics.

This essentially allows you to purchase upgrades for your ship’s core parts. These will affect the ship’s abilities as follows:

  • Hull – Speed and Hitpoints.
  • Keel – Hitpoints and Armour.
  • Helm – Rapids and Tangled Kelp resistance.
  • Sails – Storm Resistance, Speed Boost Duration, and Acceleration.
  • Trims and Flags – Cosmetics.
  • Brazier – Protects from cold damage in icy seas.

However, these are just the core parts! They aren’t the only parts of your boat, just the main ones. Let’s talk about other important parts.

Facilities

Aside from the core parts, you can also add and upgrade the Facilities on your boat. For that, use the Gangplank to board your boat.

Boat Customization Facilities | Old School RuneScape

There are multiple categories of Facilities here, and you get to choose where to place them within your boat. Here’s a rough summary of each Facility category:

  • Cannons – Used in naval combat.
  • Salvaging – Hooks that you can use to recover salvage and shipwrecks.
  • Trawling – Nets used to catch fish.
  • Storage – Your cargo hold, which contains ship-relevant items. Interact with it to modify it.
  • Stations – Facilities that are mainly used for crafting.
  • Wind – Allows you to catch winds and use them as Wind Motes, giving you a boost while sailing.
  • Misc – Various useful facilities that don’t fit any of the previous categories.

Mind you, most Facilities won’t be available to you from the get-go. A lot of them will require you to explore the world and level up your Sailing so that you can unlock their schematics!

Making Hull Parts and Repair Kits

Shipwrights' Workbench | Old School RuneScape

If you wish to upgrade your ship’s hull, you’ll need to get Hull Parts. You can craft these at the Shipwrights’ Workbench at any dock. Just click on it and then select Hull Parts.

Hull Parts generally just require 5 Planks and a small fee of Gold. Different parts will require different types of Planks. These Hull Parts are used to upgrade or build Skiffs.

Additionally, you can also turn 5 Hull Parts into 1 Large Hull Part of the same wood type. These larger parts are used to upgrade or build Sloops.

That aside, you can also use the Shipwrights’ Workbench to craft Repair Kits. These aren’t useful for building or customizing necessarily, but they’re important as they can be used while sailing to quickly fix your boat! So, they are worth noting here.

Keeping Track of Materials

Sailing Level | Old School RuneScape

As a last quick tip, you can track what materials you need even when away from the Shipwrights’ Workbench. For that, first click on your Sailing level.

Sailing Parts Info | Old School RuneScape

Then, from there, you can click on Core Boat Parts and Boat Facilities. This will show you a quick list of all available parts, which you can then click on to make all of the required parts show up in the chat box. It’s as simple as that!

Our guide comes to an end with that last tip. Now you know everything you need to build and customize your boat as part of the Sailing skill in OSRS!
