The MP9 and MAC-10 exist. The UMP45 also exists. This guide is for people who already know that and still want to use it.

The UMP45 sits in an interesting spot in CS2. It costs $1,200 and has the highest damage per shot of any SMG in the game alongside solid armor penetration. On paper it reads like something between a rifle and an SMG, punching harder than its class suggests while still falling short of a proper rifle at range. Back before the 2017 nerf it was genuinely broken and you would see it constantly. That nerf cut its range modifier down significantly and it has barely been seen in serious play since.

These days the MP9 and MAC-10 are the go-to SMG picks for CT and T side respectively, and for good reason. But if you still want to run the UMP45, it is not a terrible weapon when used correctly. It has a slower fire rate than most SMGs, a smaller magazine, and you need to respect its range limitations. In this guide, I will break down its weaknesses and how to use it properly.

Complete UMP-45 Guide

Before getting into how to use it, let me run through the stats so you have a clear picture of what you are working with.

The UMP45 comes with a 25 round magazine and three reserve magazines, which is on the smaller side compared to most SMGs and something you will feel during extended gunfights.

It fires at 666 RPM which is slower than alternatives like the MP9 but that lower fire rate is part of what gives it the higher per shot damage. Reload time sits at 3.5 seconds so you do not want to be caught mid reload in a bad position.

Movement speed is 230 units per second which is slightly lower than other SMGs, meaning you give up a small amount of mobility by running it.

Armor penetration comes in at 65% which is actually solid for an SMG and one of the genuine selling points of the weapon since it means armored opponents are not as much of a problem as they are with other options in the class.

The price point is $1,200 which makes it one of the more affordable force buy options available. On top of that it rewards $660 per kill which is the standard SMG kill reward and helps you build your economy back up after a successful round. It is available on both CT and T sides, so neither team is locked out of it.

Recoil Pattern & Spray Control

The UMP-45 has a moderately vertical spray pattern that initially climbs upward before drifting to the left. After that drift, the pattern stabilizes into a near circular motion rather than continuing to pull hard in one direction.

Here’s a short clip showing the recoil pattern of the UMP-45.

To compensate, pull your mouse down and slightly to the right to counter the leftward drift during the first phase. Once the pattern begins to stabilize and shift into its circular motion, ease off the rightward pull and stop making aggressive corrections.

Here’s a short clip showing how to control the recoil of the UMP-45.

The UMP-45 does not need heavy compensation past that initial phase, which is what makes it one of the more learnable SMG patterns in CS2 compared to something like the MAC-10.

That said, simply dragging your mouse straight down will not be enough to keep your shots consistently on target. You need to account for the leftward drift in that early phase or your bullets will pull off to the side in mid to longer range engagements. Dedicated practice on a recoil training map is the most efficient way to build the muscle memory for it.

Running Accuracy

The UMP-45 has one of the worst running accuracy stats of any SMG in CS2. Even at mid range, sprinting straight at an enemy and firing will barely connect two or three shots regardless of how well you aim.

The bullets simply go wherever they want the moment your feet are moving. This is why the UMP-45 is strictly a stop and shoot weapon. Counter strafe to a complete stop before every engagement and your accuracy improves dramatically.

Here’s a short clip showing the running accuracy of the UMP-45.

When to Use the UMP-45

If you have decided to go with the UMP-45 over the MP9 or MAC-10, keep your engagements strictly to close range and mid range at most. Beyond mid range the UMP-45 becomes largely ineffective.

The damage drop off is noticeable and your accuracy at that distance will be inconsistent enough that you will lose most gunfights against rifles or even other SMGs that handle range better. It turns into a pea shooter past that point and there is very little you can do mechanically to compensate for it.

Where the UMP-45 shines is at close range, where its damage output and manageable spray pattern give it a real edge. It is best considered a force buy option rather than a primary weapon of choice in full buy rounds.

One important habit to build when playing it is to avoid rushing aggressively into tight close range angles since its poor running accuracy means your shots will go wide even on a player standing right in front of you. Holding close angles and letting enemies push into you is the far more consistent and rewarding approach with this weapon.

Wrapping Up

That covers everything you need to know to get the most out of the UMP-45 in CS2. It is not the most versatile SMG in the game and its limitations are real, but in the right situations, particularly on force buy rounds at close range, it punches above its price point when used correctly.

Stop before you shoot, hold your angles rather than rushing them, keep your engagements close and you will find it a lot more consistent than it feels in your first few hours with it.
