Learning to rest is an important thing in Death Stranding 2, as it’s required to manage Sam’s condition. As you go about your porter job in the game, Sam’s Stamina and Blood levels will deteriorate. Simply put, the poor guy gets tired from all the trekking he has to do. Resting up will get him back in tip-top condition, though! That’s exactly what we’ll teach you how to do.
How To Rest | Death Stranding 2

Resting in this game is quite simple, you just need to find a safe spot first. This can be pretty much anywhere out in the world, as long as there aren’t any hostiles nearby. Once you’ve found a spot that’s safe enough for you, hold the Square button for a second and Sam will sit down on the ground to rest.

While resting, you can do a few different actions, which will appear as prompts in the middle of the screen. These include things such as making Sam play the harmonica, if you already obtained it. Most notable here, though, is that you can hold Square again to make Sam sleep for a bit. This will replenish Sam’s Stamina and recover his Blood levels. When you’re done resting, you can just press R1 to make Sam stand back up.
Speaking of sleep, you can also sleep in your private room at any safe house or distribution center. We definitely recommend taking a quick nap if you can before you head back out on the job!
That’s all you need to know to be able to rest in Death Stranding 2 to help Sam recover. That said, you might have noticed that resting doesn’t refill the boot bar on the bottom left corner of the screen. That’s because it’s not stamina, but your Footwear Durability. We have a guide on how to refill that, as well!
