41 articlesTarred Fabric is one of those Windrose materials that unlocks a whole tier of crafting and leaves a lot of players scratching their heads when they first need it. It is a high tier resource and not something you can just pick up off the ground. It requires a specific production chain involving materials from the Swamp biome, which is a noticeably more dangerous area than anything you will have encountered up to that point.
I will show you exactly how to get Tarred Fabric so you can push into tier four ship crafting without spending too long figuring it out on your own.
How to Craft Tarred Fabric
Before you can get your hands on Tarred Fabric, you first need to reach the third region of the game called the Cursed Swamps. To unlock access to it you need to work through the story first. Specifically, you need to defeat Thomas Richards in the Coastal Jungle region and then take down Hands in the Foothills region.
Once you are in the Cursed Swamps, the main material you need to track down is Tar. You can get it by chopping down Tarwood Trees which are scattered throughout the Swamp biome. Make sure you have an Iron Axe before heading in as regular tools will not cut it.
Next you also need Linen Fabric. To get this, look for Flax plants, which are the blue-flowered plants found growing across the Foothills islands. Harvest those to get Flax Fiber and then take it back to your Spinning Wheel. 3 Flax Fiber will give you 1 Linen Fabric.

To craft Tarred Fabric you need a Tanning Rack set up at your base. If you do not have one already, it costs 10 Wood and 5 Rope to build. After placing it down, interact with it and you will find the Tarred Fabric recipe in the menu. 1 Linen Fabric and 1 Tar will give you 1 Tarred Fabric.

That is all there is to it. Once you have the Tanning Rack set up and a steady supply of Tar and Flax Fiber coming in, Tarred Fabric becomes easy to produce in bulk.
