Reel in some juicy meat (and more) with these easy steps!

Throne & Liberty is almost out for everybody else in the world, and for those who are completely new to the game, you might be a bit overwhelmed by all of the mechanics that you can learn. In this guide, we will be easing you into it by teaching you how to fish, which will give you all sorts of potential rewards!

How to Fish

First, before you can actually start fishing, you will need to acquire a rod and bait. To do this, head over to any Contract Coin Merchant and purchase the following items:

  • Bamboo Fishing Rod – 300 Contract Coins
  • Fishing Bait Chest (50) – 20 Contract Coins and has a daily limit of one

There are much better versions of these that you can obtain later on, but you don’t need to worry about that for now. Once you have both of these items, right click them within your inventory to equip them (don’t forget to open the chest first). You’re ready to go fishing now!

Equipping the Rod & How to Cast It

With all of the required equipment on hand, head over to any body of water and then set yourself up near the edge of it. From here, hold the fishing rod by clicking on the icon on the upper left side of your hotbar.

For controller players, it is a bit unclear how this works, but you can supposedly equip the rod in a quick slot. Also, equipping it while standing near a body of water seems to automatically make your character hold it, with the controls clearly displayed on screen.

Casting the Rod + Fishing Minigame

While standing near a body of water, you will have the option to “Cast float”. The default keybind for this is F or, if you are using a controller, it will be X / A / whichever is at the bottom of your action buttons.

If the option to cast your float does not present itself, walk around until a blue marker shows up on the water. This is where your float will go once you cast the rod.

Upon casting your float, the actual fishing minigame will now begin. If you have been exposed to similar systems in other games, this should seem very familiar. To start off, you obviously have to wait for a fish to take the bait.

Once you get one to bite, the fun part begins. Two bars will appear on your screen. The orange meter shows your progress in reeling in the fish, while the green one represents your stamina.

Pay close attention to the movement of the fish. Your goal is to deplete the orange meter by dragging the rod to the left or right using your movement controls. More specifically, you have to drag opposite of the fish’s movement.

For example, if the fish is trying to swim to the right, you have to hold the “drag left” button. If it shifts to the other direction, you must do the same. Just continue this cycle until the orange bar is at zero. Along the way make sure that your stamina never goes to zero, or else the fish can escape.

To keep your stamina meter from depleting, simply avoid dragging for too long. Remember, it is better to let the fish loose for a brief moment than to give it an opportunity to snap away completely.

NOTE: For controller players, you can drag the rod using the left analog stick. Just push it left and right, depending on the fish’s trajectory.

Why Even Bother Fishing?

Fishing can give you all sorts of rewards aside from the fish themselves. Occasionally, you might reel in some containers that can contain various possible rewards, including resources of varying rarities or a stack of money.

The fish themselves can be used in certain cooking recipes, though you will need to train that up in order to whip up better dishes. These food items can give you temporary bonuses ranging from better stats in PVP to higher DPS against bosses.

Finally, it should be noted that fishing is a life skill that you can level up, and each catch will get you some experience points. Having a high fishing level will give you increased odds of reeling in higher tier loot.

And that is everything you need to know when it comes to the fishing life skill in this game. Upgraded fishing equipment can be unlocked later on through various activities in the open world.
