Windrose has four main factions, but the system is a lot deeper than a simple reputation grind like in other games. Most new players assume that factions work like a standard RPG system where you pick a side and slowly gain favor through quests.
However, the way reputation actually works in the game is different from what you are used to. It is not just about grinding quests or killing enemies. The system ties directly to physical items you find in the world, and if you do not know what to do with them, you will be stuck with basic gear forever.
Let me break it down so you are not wasting your time.
Faction System Explained in Windrose

There are a total of four factions in the game, namely:
- Brethren of the Coast
- Smugglers of Port Royal
- Rogue Buccaneers
- People of Tortuga
There’s also Blackbeard’s faction, but that one is permanently hostile and has no reputation track, unlike the rest.
As you sail towards Tortuga, you will run into a naval battle between ships. One of the ships under attack belongs to the Rogue Buccaneers, and you need to help them out. This is your first real introduction to a faction in the game.
Currently, there is no negative reputation system with any of the factions. You cannot accidentally anger them or lock yourself out of their content. All of the ships you find from these factions are friendly in the waters and cannot be harmed.
They also do not compete with each other since they all share a common enemy, which is Blackbeard. This means you are free to build a reputation with all four without worrying about picking sides or ruining relationships.
The Brethren are generally the best early choice for ship progression and naval upgrades, while the Smugglers become extremely valuable later thanks to currency exchange improvements, utility unlocks, and Naval Tactics upgrades.
Buccaneers focus more on offensive combat gear, while the People of Tortuga lean heavily into utility, contracts, and settlement progression.
Selling Loot
Selling loot in Windrose works a bit differently than what you might be used to. You cannot just walk up to any vendor and offload everything in your inventory. Every item is tied to a specific faction, and you need to sell it to that faction’s buyer.
If you hover over an item in your inventory, the tooltip will tell you exactly which faction will take it off your hands.
When you sell those items, you earn two types of currency: Piastre, which is Spanish Silver, and Guinea, which is English Gold. Both are useful for different things, so you want to build up a stock of each.
Once you visit a faction hideout, look for the NPC with “Buyer” written above their head. That is who you need to interact with to sell your items.
A common mistake new players make is hoarding faction loot for too long or selling it to the wrong vendor. However, you can make early progression much smoother if you regularly cash in trade goods and insignias instead of letting them pile up.
Converting Currencies

You can convert Piastre into Guinea or the other way around at the Smugglers of Port Royal, but I would not recommend doing this early on. The exchange rate is very bad when you are just starting out, and you will lose a lot of value for no real benefit.
You can look into this later on when you have increased your reputation with them.
During the first few weeks of the game, many players wasted huge amounts of value converting too early. That is still not recommended unless you specifically need Guinea for an upgrade breakpoint.
As soon as your Smuggler reputation increases, the conversion system becomes more practical and starts fitting naturally into late-game progression loops.
Increasing Reputation
Your reputation with a faction directly determines the quality of the gear and blueprints you can buy from them. To increase your reputation, you need to bring two specific types of items to the Bounty Agent of that faction.
Insignia
First is Insignia, which you can get by sinking Blackbeard ships, clearing pirate camps, and participating in naval combat activities. There are four tiers of Insignia, with each one awarding a different amount of faction reputation points.
They’re as follows:
- Newhand Insignia – Gives 1 Reputation Point
- Deckhand Insignia – Gives 4 Reputation Points
- Veteran Insignia – Gives 20 Reputation Points
- Old Salt Insignia – Gives 80 Reputation Points
Letters of Favor
The other item is the Letters of Favor, which come from faction side quests. They’re also one of the fastest ways to rank up your reputation early on.
Each quest rewards a different amount depending on which one you complete. For example, completing the Buccaneers side quest will reward you with 5 Letters of Favor, while Catastrophe’s Aftermath hands out 10.
Each individual Letter of Favor converts into 10 Reputation Points.
Hiring Crew Members
You can also use the Piastre you get from selling loot to factions to hire crew members. These are NPCs standing around the hub of Tortuga. After hiring them, you can assign them to a station on your ship according to their specific bonuses, such as the Alchemist Station or the Gear Upgrade Station.
Each crew member brings a unique buff, so you want to match them to the right station to get the most out of them.

Some workers are focused entirely on efficiency bonuses, while others improve production chains or resource generation. In multiplayer sessions, faction progression seems to be server-wide, but hired workers are still tied to individual characters.
Merchant Contracts
The faction Provisioner offers contracts that let you build different structures for your base. One of the most useful ones to go for is the Merchant: Animal Products station. Once you build it, you can place orders for various food items and resources, and they get shipped directly to your outpost.

This becomes much more valuable later, especially when your crafting chains and settlement upgrades require larger amounts of materials.
Wrapping Up
As you can see, the faction system in Windrose is less about choosing sides and more about long-term progression efficiency.
Reputation comes from specific physical items. You farm Insignias and Letters of Favor, take them to the Bounty Agent, and rank up for better gear. No negative rep, no picking sides. The game does not explain it well, but now you know the loop.
Right now, most players tend to prioritize Brethren or Smugglers first, but eventually, you will want a high reputation with all four factions anyway.
