Sometimes, not all of your friends are on the same platform. This can make it hard to set up multiplayer sessions with them unless games support cross-platform multiplayer, also known as crossplay.
In this article, we’ll dive into whether Terraria supports crossplay or not. The popular survival game is currently available on PC, mobile, and modern consoles, so it has a very spread-out player base.
Now, without further ado, read on and we’ll go over everything there is to know about Terraria’s crossplay functionality.
How Crossplay Works in Terraria
Terraria currently has very limited support for crossplay.
Mobile users have full crossplay support between Android and iOS devices, but not with PC or console versions.
Similarly, PC players can play with each other across Steam and GOG. They can also play with each other across Windows, Linux, and Mac. However, they can’t play with console or mobile users.
PlayStation players can play with each other across PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. This is partly because Terraria has no native PS5 version, however, so both consoles run the PS4 version.
Xbox players can also match with each other across the Xbox One and Xbox Series. Both versions of the game are the same, with the Series using Backwards Compatibility to run the Xbox One version.
As you can see, this sadly means that there’s no crossplay between completely different platforms. PlayStation players can’t play with Xbox players at all, for example.
It’s not all doom and gloom, though. There is some good news!
Developers are Working on Expanding Crossplay Features
The official “State of the Game” blog post for January 2023 has the game’s developers state that they are hopeful for 2023 to go down as the year of Terraria crossplay.
While they seem reticent about sharing more information, they seem to be working on expanding the game’s crossplay functionality soon.
Even more recently, the March 2023 “State of the Game” post stated that they are working on updating the game’s internal systems to support crossplay.
The changelog even optimistically tells players to “hold on to your butts”. While there are no expected dates other than “soon”, it sounds like development is going well!
So, there you have it. Everything there is to know about Terraria’s current crossplay features and the bright future that awaits the game.
Venezuelan gamer cursed by being interested by most games, resulting in a ridiculous backlog he’ll never be able to conquer. Been gaming for over two decades now! Few things exemplify his wide variety in gaming tastes as the fact that he’s a big fan of both Souls games and the Atelier series at the same time. Also a big fan of Yakuza/Like a Dragon, Deadly Premonition, Zero Escape, and Dead Rising, among others. Considers Lost Judgment and Sekiro to both be masterpieces.
