Odin is one of the Major Norse Gods in Age of Mythology: Retold and also a pretty beginner-friendly one due to how easy it is to get a decent build order and his high overall efficiency.
Primarily, Odin focuses on bolstering units from Great Halls. These units are already pretty strong on their own, so making them even better is definitely a welcome boon. What’s more, Odin gets access to unique Raven units that can serve as scouts. They can’t attack, but they respawn for free and will let you see all of the map clearly.
In this guide, we’ll give you a standard opener build order for Odin that will allow you to get into the Classical Age with ease.
Odin Build Order Guide | Age of Mythology: Retold
The first order of business when you play as Odin in Age of Mythology: Retold is to build a few Ox Carts. Quickly assign 2 of your first Villagers to hunt for Food. Then, assign the 3rd Villager to build 2 different Ox Carts.
Once the Villager is done building the Ox Carts, assign him to a tree to start gathering Wood. Place an Ox Cart near him, and then place the second Ox Cart near your Gold Mine. You can use Odin’s Great Hunt ability where you placed your hunters to get more Food early. Have one of your hunters take a quick break to build a House. Have them return to hunting once they’re done.
Next up, you will want to train 1 Dwarf and 1 Villager. Task the Dwarf with getting Gold at the Gold Mine, while the Villager goes to hunt for Food alongside your starting Villagers. Also, train another Villager and assign them to get Wood. Send them to the same tree you placed the other Villager and Ox Cart before.
Once that’s set up, repeat that exact process twice more when you get the resources to train more Dwarves and Villagers. While doing so, also ensure to assign one of your Villagers to build a Temple. It can be any of your Villagers, just ensure that they return to their previous task after construction. In total, you should aim to have the following population spread by the time the Temple is built: 7 Villagers on Food, 4 Villagers on Wood, and 4 Dwarves on Gold.
Classical Age and Beyond
As always, which Minor God you choose to focus on will depend on your play style and your opponents’ behavior. All choices are solid for Odin, so there’s no must-have. What does matter is that you pick quickly and start advancing as soon as you can!
While advancing, you can either scout the map for resources or start building defensive walls to protect yourself. Odin is best played defensively, so make sure to bolster your defenses as much as possible while advancing to the Classical Age.
What we do recommend is that you start researching the Hand Axe (120 Food, 50 Gold) and Pickaxe (50 Food, 120 Wood) upgrades as quickly as possible. It’s also a good idea to set up a Great Hall quickly and train a Hersir at your Temple. You can use the Hersir to gather Relics or simply scout the map as you wait to advance.
Nonetheless, that’s the end of our build guide for Odin in Age of Mythology: Retold. Due to how this game usually plays out, there’s no set build order to recommend moving forward. Everything from now on will heavily depend on your playstyle and the enemy’s actions!
Odin’s son, Thor, is also a playable Major Norse God in this game. If you wish to try playing as him, check out our build order guide for Thor!
