Freyr is one of the playable Major Norse Gods in Age of Mythology: Retold, and he has a pretty beginner-friendly build order that most players can do well with.

Aside from being a fairly beginner-friendly god to play, Freyr is also quite versatile. This makes him a good choice no matter what you’re dealing with once you get used to his basic build order and overall game plan.

In this guide, we’ll give you a solid standard opening build order to get you started with playing as Freyr.

Freyr Build Order Guide

Start of the match

To kick off this Freyr build order in Age of Mythology: Retold, you’ll first want to send your 3 initial Civilians and the Ox Cart to a Gold Mine. At the same time, train 1 other Civilian and send them to chop down a straggler tree for Wood. While they work, feel free to use your initial Berserk unit to explore the map.

Once you have a total of 150 Gold, take your 3 mining Civilians and send them to hunt for Food instead. Note that you can speed things up by manually tasking your Civilians to drop down the mined Gold at the Ox Cart once the mine is at 2949/3000.

Switch to hunting

Either way, you now want to keep training Villagers and task them to hunt for Food as well. You should aim to have 8 Civilians on Food, and 1 Civilian on Wood. At the same time, get your Berserk to a favorable position as you get closer to 11/15 Population. That means, have them either return to base or position them next to an unclaimed Settlement, depending on how aggressively you want to play.

Temple built

Once the Berserk unit is where you want them, have them build a Temple. Meanwhile, keep training Civilians until you have 12 on Food and 1 on Wood. You should be ready to start advancing once you reach 15/15 Population. Which Minor God you pick usually depends on your preference, but we’re recommending Ullr for this build order.

Advancing to the Classical Age

Asgardian Bastion starts

As soon as you pick your Minor God and start advancing, you’ll want to change your Civilians to the following setup: 6 on Food, 3 on Wood (move them to a forest at this point), and 4 on Gold. Build an Ox Cart as soon as possible. You want to have an Ox Cart near the forest and one near the Gold Mine. At the same time, have your Berserk build a House near your chosen Temple location.

Next up, start training 1 Hersir and 1 Civilian while you’re still advancing. Send the Civilian to gather Wood as soon as they’re ready. The Hersir should be ready by the time you finish advancing into the Classical Age, as well.

If you followed our recommendation by choosing Ullr when advancing, cast Ullr’s Asgardian Bastion power. Make your Hersirs and the initial Berserk unit build an Asgardian Hill Fort near your Temple. Use the Draugr you get from advancing through Ullr to harass the enemy in the meantime.

Asgardian Bastion done

While the Asgardian Bastion is undergoing construction, keep training more Hersirs and Civilians. You want to get to 3 Hersirs at the very least. As for Civilians, you want to reach the following spread: 6 on Food, 4 on Wood, and 9 on Gold. Have one of your mining Civilians take a break to build a House near your original Town Center whenever possible.

At this point, the build order for Freyr is pretty much complete in Age of Mythology: Retold. All that’s really left is for you to try to capture a Settlement to establish your second Town Center. As always, strategies and building requirements from this point forward will vary greatly depending on your preferences and your enemy’s behavior!

If you want to play as another of the Norse Major Gods, check out our build order guide for Odin as well. He provides a fairly easy-to-play build order, similar to Freyr.
