With multiple balance patches and the release of The Infinite Museion, Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader is in a much better state than it was years ago. Some archetypes which were underwhelming back then have now received meaningful buffs. Meanwhile, the strongest classes have been toned down just enough to allow for greater build diversity.

This results in nearly every archetype capable of clearing the game on higher difficulties with the right setup. Nonetheless, some still offer more consistent value during your playthrough.

So, if you want to maximize your playthrough, it’s only natural to pick the best archetype in the game. That’s exactly what this updated tier list is for. Let’s get started.

Class Tier List Ranked From Best to Worst in Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader

  • S Tier: Master Tactician, Officer
  • A Tier: Warrior, Assassin, Arch-Militant, Operative, Soldier
  • B Tier: Grand Strategist, Vanguard, Bounty Hunter

S Tier

The Master Tactician and Officer still remain at the top, thanks to their overall versatility and extremely good Action Point usage. This is after numerous balance patches have been rolled out. Instead of dishing out insane damage, these archetypes specialize in increasing the effectiveness of their entire party.

For example, the Master Tactician’s “Press the Advantage” allows them to spend Tactical Advantage to gain extra damage. This can stack, leading to insanely powerful single-shot attacks.

The archetype also scales remarkably well into the late game, where larger encounters allow it to generate resources quickly and support both offensive and defensive strategies.

The Officer, on the other hand, can bolster their entire team’s Action Points. Overall, they’re key to giving their team more turns, but they rely heavily on the strength of their allies.

This level of action economy is hard to replicate for other archetypes, making the Officer a must-have in every team composition.

A Tier

The A tier is where certain archetypes are powerful enough to complete an entire playthrough without relying on certain specialized builds. While they might not be as impressive as the ones in S tier, they’re still solid choices for most players.

The Warrior, Assassin, Arch-Militant, and Soldier all sit confidently in the A-Tier. They’re all equally good attackers, especially when bolstered by the Officer and Master Tactician units.

Generally speaking, they’re all equally powerful depending on which type of attacker you want.

The Warrior, Assassin, Arch-Militant, and Soldier all sit confidently in the A-Tier. They’re all equally good attackers, especially when bolstered by the Officer and Master Tactician units.

Generally speaking, they’re all equally powerful depending on which type of attacker you want.

The Warrior boasts amazing survivability, melee damage, and certain defensive capabilities. It’s especially useful in most longer encounters since their durability allows them to outlast most enemies.

Meanwhile, Arch-Militant remains one of the best damage scaling archetypes in the game. In fact, a properly optimized Arch-Militant can be one of the highest damage dealing classes in the game.

The Operative also managed to crawl its way into the A tier, thanks to recent buffs which greatly improved its core mechanics. Due to this, the Operative can now benefit from stronger scaling and excel as support-damage hybrids.

B Tier

The ones in the B tier aren’t necessarily weak. In fact, Owlcat’s recent balance patches have shortened the gap between the higher and lower tiers. Regardless, archetypes in this tier are more situational.

In some cases, they require more investment before they can reach their full potential.

For example, the Vanguard is capable of absorbing tons of damage which makes it quite useful on higher difficulties. However, its offensive capabilities are lacking compared to the one in higher tiers.

The Grand Strategist excels in crowd control. However, its buffs aren’t particularly useful if you end combat quickly, unless you’re making use of certain builds for Pasqal.

Lastly, the Bounty Hunter relies too heavily on buffs from killing enemies. Combat will be over by the time the Bounty Hunter is ready! While it has received multiple buffs since launch, it’s still a bit more specialized than the other archetypes.

Final Thoughts

One of the biggest improvements to Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader since launch is its overall class balance. The gap between the strongest and weakest archetypes is much smaller than it was at release. This gives players far more freedom to experiment with different team compositions.

However, if you want the strongest team composition possible, then make sure to include the Officer and Master Tactician in your party.
