The Piggy Bank is a “Personal Storage” item in Terraria. Unlike chests, what you put inside it is tied to your character and not to the world.
This makes it handy since no one else can grab what you put into it! Also, multiple Piggy Banks will share the same inventory for your character, making them handy for transferring items.
In this guide, we’ll tell you how to get your hands on this item.
Getting Your Own Piggy Bank in Terraria
The Piggy Bank can only be acquired by purchasing it from a Merchant for 1 Gold Coin.
This merchant is an NPC that will spawn once you have at least 50 Silver Coins. Note that the game only counts coins if you have them in your main inventory!
Additionally, you will need to buy a suitable house for him to appear.
Building a House and Inviting the Merchant
To make a proper house, you will need to make a building. You can have some freedom with its dimensions as long as it covers 60 tiles. A basic house would be 5 blocks high and 10 blocks wide.
The house will also require the following furnishings:
Background walls
A light source such as a torch
A flat surface furniture such as a workbench
A comfort item such as a wood chair
A valid entrance such as a wooden door
The materials you used for the house don’t matter at all, so you can make it out of dirt if you wish. Just keep in mind that you can’t use naturally occurring dirt walls for houses.
You can check the validity of your house by using the Housing menu within your Inventory. Click on the “?” icon and then click on your house. If it’s good enough, the game will say it’s suitable.
Also, keep in mind that the house will need to be empty. If another NPC moves into the house, you will need to make another house for the Merchant.
Once the house is ready, you just need to go get 50 Silver Coins. You can find them in the world as loot and by killing enemies.
Despite Silver being one of the ores in the game, you can’t craft Silver Coins.
Meet these requirements and the Merchant will move into the empty house. Just speak with him and choose to purchase the Piggy Bank. That’s it!
