If you’ve just reached Chapter 1: Process II in Arknights Endfield, you’ll already have run into some frustrating quests. Paving The Way is one such quest which throws a bunch of complicated mechanics at you. It gets especially complicated when you’re supposed to use the Gearing Unit to produce Amethyst Components.
It took me a bit of time to figure it out as well but I finally managed to complete the objective. In this guide, I’ll show you step by step what you need to do. Let’s get into it!
Use the Gearing Unit to Produce Amethyst Components
This objective in Paving The Way is really complicated. You need to set up the Gearing Unit, produce the necessary materials, craft the components and even feed the Amethyst Components into the Automation Core.
On top of that, you can also run out of materials which is quite frustrating. The game does not really guide you through this process properly so early in the game.

Step 1 – Place The Gearing Unit In The Core AIC Area
Starting off, you need to place the Gearing Unit that you’ll actually be using to craft the components. I recommend that you pick the right spot – ideally near the Automation Core.
You’ll know why that’s important towards the end.

Step 2 – Place Amethyst Ore Into Refining Unit
Once the unit is placed, start by interacting with the Refining Unit component.

Over here, select the Amethyst Ore so that it can be converted into Amethyst Fibers. The formula for this should auto-select (If it doesn’t just select it manually). After that, you’ll find them automatically start to be produced and added to the Gearing Unit.

Step 3 – Use Gearing Unit To Produce Amethyst Components
With the Amethyst Fiber production started, interacting with the Gearing Unit output port.

Here, you should select the Amethyst Component so that the Amethyst Fibers can be used for it. After that, you’ll find that the components are automatically produced. However, the objective still won’t be completed for some reason – even after producing 20 components.
This is because there is one additional step.

Step 4 – Connect Gearing Unit Output To Automation Core
To complete the objective, you actually need to connect the output of the Gearing Unit to the input of the Automation Core. You can do this easily by simply adding a track between them.
Once you do so, the Amethyst Components will automatically be transported to the Automation Core. As the components go through the input port, the objective number of 20 components will slowly start to complete.

How To Get More Materials?
While producing the Amethyst Components, you can easily run out of material i.e. Amethyst Core. To get more, all you need to do is go to the Automatic Miners you likely placed in a previous quest at the mines. You can also manually mine the Amethyst Ores there as well.

Over here, interact with the miners and you’ll be able to pick up more ore. You might also be able to get some from the Depot when placing amethyst ore in your backpack.

Sum Up
That’s everything you need to know about using the Gearing Unit to produce Amethyst Components in Arknights Endfield for the Paving The Way quest. Quite a complicated quest, especially the part where you actually need to put the components in the Automation Core. I also had to make a few runs to keep getting Amethyst Ores from nearby miners. But eventually, with the setup above, you’ll be able to complete the objective!
