If you want to fully utilize the Spear in The First Berserker: Khazan, you’ll need a build that focuses on what’s best for it.
The Spear is possibly the best weapon to pick if you want a dodge-focused playstyle. It has a lot of key Skills that make dodging a lot easier, and it’s also capable of enabling extremely strong counterattacks from dodges. As such, our build will focus on making the best of those unique aspects!
Read on and we’ll go over everything you need to know to use our best Spear build.
Best Spear Build | The First Berserker: Khazan
Stat Distribution
First off, let’s talk about stats. Spears in this primarily scale with Proficiency, but also get a smaller power boost from Willpower. If you’re planning to use only a spear, level Proficiency exclusively as your offensive stat. You can ignore Willpower, as it’s only worth leveling if you’re planning to use Dual Wield weapons.
It’s also worth noting that Proficiency, like the other offensive stats, doesn’t have a soft cap. That means you don’t get diminishing returns at higher levels. So, for the sake of a pure Spear build, you can safely ignore Strength and Willpower.
That leaves us with the defensive stats: Vitality and Endurance. You want to try to level those stats up to level 30, which is their first soft cap. You’ll get diminishing returns past 30 on those stats, with another soft cap at 60 further reducing their effectiveness.
Now, what to level up first is up to you, more or less. We recommend leveling up Endurance first early in the game, however. It’ll give you more Stamina, which can make the game easier to manage. That aside, level up Vitality for Health and Proficiency to increase your damage as you see fit.
In summary, focus on Endurance early. Then level Vitality and Proficiency as needed. Put everything into Proficiency once you get Endurance and Vitality to 30 each.
Recommended Gear
When it comes to our gear, we will be trying to use the full Fallen Lord Set. You can get this set’s pieces as random drops from Viper in the “Forgotten Temple” Main Mission. Alternatively, you can have Qazumaka craft the set for you if you get the Fallen Lord’s Scroll during the “Kaleido” Bonus Mission.
The full set will give you the following benefits:
As you can see from this gear setup, the build will primarily focus on using Moonlight Stance and Brink Dodge. You’ll be able to dodge much more easily and you’ll also be able to deal high damage while keeping pressure up. We’ll go into more detail on that in the next section when we take a look at Skills.
When it comes to Accessories, what you use will depend heavily on whatever Random Attributes your gear has. These are some of the most important ones to look out for:
Max Stamina
Stamina Recovery
Dodge Stamina Cost Decrease
DMG Multiplier Increase
DMG Increase
Frontal Assault: DMG Multiplier Increase
Frontal Assault: DMG Increase
Potent Blow: Attack DMG
Basically, focus on anything that helps with Stamina and Attack. Nonetheless, Accessories are pretty open-ended so you can play around with them as you see fit.
Alternate Gear Setup
With that said, there’s another potential gear setup you can use before you get the full Fallen Lord set. Basically, you can use this while you farm. For this, you’ll want to use a combination of the Butcher and Ashen Wolf sets. You’ll want something that looks like this:
Ashen Wolf 2-Piece for the following buff:
+10% Dodge Stamina Cost Decrease
Butcher 3-Piece for the following buffs:
+10% Swift Attack: DMG Multiplier Increase
Attack: Gain [Chain] (max: 5 stacks)
This setup, similar to the full Fallen Lord set, focuses on improving your dodges and Swift Attacks. It’s not quite as powerful as the Fallen Lord set, but it’s also much easier to get and use in the early to mid-game!
Skill Selection
At long last, the big thing that defines our best Spear build in The First Berserker: Khazan. As we mentioned before, this build will primarily focus on using Swift Attacks and Moonlight. This will give you a build that makes it easy to dodge while also being capable of dishing out constant damage.
Now, let’s go over each of the Skills for this build.
Spear – Swift Attack Tree
The most important tree, as it has everything related to Moonlight and the Moonlight Stance. This is what enables you, as it allows you to dodge (and Brink Dodge) much more easily while also boosting your damage. As such, you’ll want to make maxing out this tree your priority! Here’s what each Skill does:
Moonlight – Turns your third Swift Attack into a horizontal slash.
Moonlight Stance (3/3) – Activates when you land Moonlight. Grants additional afterimage attacks for 15 seconds. Max this out ASAP.
Moonlight Stance: Vitality – Increases stamina recovery while in Moonlight Stance.
Moonlight Stance: Persistence – Performing a Brink Dodge or Brink Guard while in Moonlight Stance will extend its duration by 3 seconds, up to a max of 30 seconds. Get this as soon as it becomes available.
Moonlight Dodge – Allows you to do a second dodge right after dodging in Moonlight Stance.
Moonlight Step: Intercept – Activating a Brink Dodge in Moonlight Stance counts as an attack, dealing damage to enemies in the path of the dodge.
Moonlight Step: Afterimage – Increases your invincibility period while dodging in Moonlight Stance. Nullifies the damage of the evaded attack when you Brink Dodge.
Full Moon (3/3) – Hold Potent Blow while in Moonlight Stance to perform. Charges faster than normal Potent Blows and covers a wide area. Rank 1 cancels out Moonlight Stance, however, so upgrade to Rank 2 and 3 as soon as possible.
Crimson Strike – Triggers when you land a Brutal Attack against an Exhausted enemy while in Moonlight Stance. Ends Moonlight Stance, but does much more damage than regular Brutal Attacks.
Moonlight Stance: Wrath – Makes Full Moon and Crimson Strike stronger depending on how much time your Moonlight Stance has left. More time equals more damage!
Get Spiral Thrust
When it comes to the Potent Blow tree, you mainly want to get Spiral Thrust if you’re using the full Fallen Lord set. As we mentioned before, that set’s bonus boosts Spiral Thrust by a bit, so you might as well make use of that! However, it’s still a decent Skill to have even with the alternate gear set.
Anyway, here’s which Skills to get in this tree and what they do:
Spiral Thrust (3/3) – Charge the spear and spin it while thrusting it forward. Comes out pretty quickly and can stagger some enemies, including bosses.
Spiral Thrust: Swirl – Allows you to charge Spiral Thrust. You’ll consume 1 additional Spirit but will gain increased damage and poise. Deals extra damage after using Brutal Attacks and to Exhausted enemies.
Spiral Thrust: Vortex – Increases the range of a fully charged Spiral Thrust and the damage done as Guard Penetration.
Other Spear Skills
With the main things out of the way, there are still some other Skills you might want to get. However, these are lower priority than just maxing out your Swift Strike tree and getting Spiral Thrust. So, only start getting these after you’ve done that!
Nonetheless, here are the few remaining Skills you want to finish up this build, in order of importance:
Shrewd Tree
Agility (3/3) – Reduces the Stamina cost of dodging.
Guard Tree
Phantom: Heatwave – Spin your spear to block attacks at the cost of 1 Spirit, doubling as Brink Guard. Also gives you a buff that lasts for 30 seconds and upgrades the shockwave attacks from Moonlight and Full Moon.
Breakdown – Increases the Stamina Damage done by Brink Guards.
Chain Tree
Chaser – Decreases Stamina costs of attacks while an enemy is exhausted.
Chaser: Devour – Gradually recover 1 Spirit while an enemy is exhausted.
Potent Blow Tree
Fighting Spirit – Increases the amount of Spirit gained from attacks.
Zero Point – Adds an extra strike to the Potent Blow combo.
Zero Point: Fortress – Increases the damage of Zero Point.
Common Skills
Last but not least, we have to talk about the Common Skills you need for this build. Our focus here is mainly to max out the Resources tree, which gives us the most Spirit. Here’s the skills you want to get and what they do:
Resources Tree
Spirit Extraction – Get 1 Spirit Point when you interact with Lacrima.
Enduring Spirit – Get Spirit when taking damage.
Opportunistic Spirit (3/3) – Get more Spirit when performing a Brink Dodge. With how dodge-focused this build is, you want to max this out first.
Reflection: Armor – Get more Spirit when attacking.
Indomitable Spirit – Gain more Spirit when doing Brink Guards.
As for everything else? It’s honestly up to you, as none of it is really necessary to make this build work. Just focus on maxing out the entire Resources tree and you can spend the remaining Mastery Points as you see fit.
That’s the end of our guide for our best Spear build in The First Berserker: Khazan! Mind you, this build is heavily focused on dodges instead of Brink Guards, so it might not fit every player. Nonetheless, it’s a pretty powerful and easy-to-use build for players accustomed to dodge-reliant playstyles!
