Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a recently released adventure game based on Arthurian legends, and it allows you to craft a character and their specialties from the ground up. As with most games like this, you can tailor your build to be more physical or magic focused, or sometimes even have the best of both worlds. In this guide, we will share with you some tips to build a pure mage type character.

Tainted Grail Fall of Avalon – Best Mage Build Guide

Starting off, since this is mainly going to be a magic focused build, it only feels right that your attribute points are spent only on spirituality. This will maximize your spell power and mana pool, as well as give you faster resource regeneration to let you spam away.

However, an argument could also be made for adding just a bit of endurance to your build. If you find yourself struggling to survive, consider mixing it up and pumping a few points into endurance. Most players have found that they do not need it, however, so your mileage will vary.

Our take is that you should just play it safe and add a couple of points to endurance every now and then. You will eventually run into stuff that will require just a bit of it, so there is no harm in doing so.

Now, when it comes to allocating some of your skill points, early game is going to be focused more on raw power. This is because you should not be struggling to survive against the earlier enemies anyway, so investing in pure DPS will help you clear content with ease.

Consider taking Mana Battery to give you a lot of mana, and try adding Power in Swiftness for some extra power. The latter works because you are going to be wearing and leveling up light armor anyway, which means that your movement penalties will be negligible.

As you progress further through the game, you could consider using some of your skill points to increase your health pool. However, this is only if you are really struggling. If you find it easy to survive in spite of your low health pool, pump your points into more damage and regeneration instead.

Consider finding the Blood Ring as well. This will make your enemies bleed on hit, which is a status effect that you can take advantage of in various ways.

For example, with the Exploitation of Afflictions active, your enemies will take up to 30% more damage while they have a status effect on them. Obviously, this also means you have to invest three points into the statuses skill tree, as the base version only adds 10% damage.

While you have the Blood Ring equipped, this means that you are always going to have bonus damage on enemies no matter what. If you do not have this ring yet, you can achieve the same effect manually by casting Blood transfusion, which can feel a bit cumbersome.

That ring in particular seemingly works with any other spell, so you are not just applying bleed, but also an innate debuff that amplifies any hit. This is perfect for bursting enemies down in no time, which is the main goal of a spell slinging build like this one.

Now, as you level up, you can also consider dropping points into Charged Cantrip and Infused Incantation. With these two skills active, you can alternate between cheap and expensive mana cost spells to deal a lot of bonus damage.

Combined with the Exploitation of Afflictions buff, assuming you are keeping 100% uptime on statuses like bleed, you will be dealing an insane amount of damage with your sustained firepower.

If you can afford to do so, add more points into nodes that will increase your critical hit chance as well. You can even try Deep Wounds if you do not have the Blood Ring and hate using transfusion, but this will be pretty inconsistent.

Flipping it around and looking at the survivability side of things, consider adding some points into Agility for cheaper dashes, and then unlock Athletic Build and maybe slap some points into Fast Reflexes to help your evade regenerate faster.

That part is not essential, but it will be incredibly useful in certain fights where you have to maintain your distance. Again, your mileage may vary depending on how difficult it is for you to actually avoid taking damage.

As far as spells go, just make sure that you have two that deal burst damage and can be alternated with ease. This will let you take full advantage of Charged Cantrip and Infused Incantation.

If you want to focus on status effect damage, you are free to choose whichever applicable spells you have at your disposal. Any of them will benefit from Exploitation of Afflictions, so just pick whatever tickles your fancy.

For items, a good set to try and get is the Waning Moon Set. This includes the following items, as well as their effects and requirements:

  • Cowl of the Waning Moon (Helmet) – Increases your mana regeneration by 1, and it also gives you a 50% buff to this whenever you are low on mana. It requires 6 spirituality and endurance to equip.
  • Robes of the Waning Moon (Cuirass) – While wearing it, you will gain 5 mana whenever you get it, and your max mana is also increased by a small number. It requires 6 spirituality and endurance to equip.
  • Breeches of the Waning Moon (Greaves) – These pants will increase your max mana by 10, and you will also gain bonus regeneration while you are out of combat. It requires 6 spirituality and endurance to equip.
  • Wraps of the Waning Moon (Gauntlets) – While equipped, you will gain bonus spell power, which is further increased if your health is lower than your maximum mana. It requires 6 spirituality and endurance to equip.
  • Shoes of the Waning Moon (Boots) – While equipped, these will increase your movement speed multiplier whenever your mana drops below 25%. It also increases your spell power by a decent amount. It requires 6 spirituality and endurance to equip.
  • Amulet of the Waning Moon (Amulet) – This item will increase your spell power, magic critical hit chance, and maximum mana, all by 10% each. It requires no stats to equip, unlike the rest of the items in the set.
