Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a truly special open-world RPG, but it can be hard to pick up as a complete starter.

While the game does allow you to become strong as you progress, the early game can feel quite tough. Knowing how to approach the game in these early hours can make it a lot less daunting, though!

In this guide, we’ll give you key tips to help make the beginning of Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon easier for you.

Make Sure to Explore

Exploration | Tainted Grail Fall of Avalon: Starter Guide

One of the main attractions to Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is simply its exploration. Not only do you get to explore a unique fantasy world, but you’ll also find some worthwhile loot around nearly every corner. In fact, we have a whole guide dedicated to about 25 of the most powerful early items you can find. That’s just 25 notable ones in the first region, there’s way more to find than just that!

It’s also a great idea to make sure to have multiple types of tools on you while you explore. Primarily make sure to carry Shovels, Pickaxes, and Woodcutting Axes. They allow you to gather resources you otherwise can’t, such as digging up buried chests. Sometimes you can even use them to open up blocked paths, letting you access new areas!

So, in short, make sure to explore thoroughly. Check under every rock, it’s worthwhile because the game rewards you for it almost always.

Get a Horse!

Swierkon the Horse

Going hand in hand with our previous section, it’s a good idea to try to get a horse as soon as possible. Swierkon the Horse, which is shown above, is a pretty easy one to get. You can find it and mount it near King’s Road and Ruined Broch in the Horns of the South region.

While this game doesn’t feature any horseback combat at all, having a horse greatly speeds up exploration and traversal. Believe us, you’ll need it!

Don’t Be Afraid of the Night

Nighttime | Tainted Grail Fall of Avalon: Starter Guide

The nighttime in Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon can seem pretty daunted for any starter. Nighttime means stronger monsters, both due to empowered enemies and Wyrd creatures. However, it’s a bad idea to ignore it for too long.

The thing is, those same strong foes are also a great source of loot. They often drop Ethereal Cobwebs, which is a special currency, as well as Unidentified Items. You can use the Ethereal Cobwebs to identify these items at Bonfires, among other things. It’s a great way to get some stronger loot, so you’ll be missing out if you stick to the daytime for your entire playthrough!

Use the Stashes

Stash Icon Example

If you find your inventory is a tad too cluttered, you should visit a friendly settlement and use its Stash. These appear as chest icons on your map, as shown in the example above. They serve as a safe container for you to store any loot you want!

What’s more, Stashes are also all linked together. That means that what you put in a Stash in one place will be available in any other Stashes you come across. You don’t need to keep track of where you stored what. It’s an extremely convenient system, so make sure to use it often.

Statues Boost Your Proficiency

Proficiency Statue | Tainted Grail Fall of Avalon: Starter Guide

This is something that’s pretty easy to miss, even if you’ve been playing the game for a while. There are multiple statues spread over the game world that look like a normal person with a plaque. Approach these and interact with the plaque to read it every time you see them. You get a bit of lore and, more importantly, also increase your Proficiency levels.

For example, Esgar the Protector’s statue is shown above. It looks like just a regular statue of a legendary knight, but reading its plaque will increase your One-Handed proficiency level. Make sure not to miss out on these free Proficiency boosters!

Summons Are Pretty Strong

Combat Tips | Tainted Grail Fall of Avalon: Starter Guide

If you find yourself having trouble with the game’s combat, it might be a good idea to invest into Spirituality’s Summoning skill tree. It allows you to summon minions, which can make a dramatic difference in combat. Not only will your enemies have to divide their attention between you and your minions, your minions are also capable fighters in their own right.

Other than that, it’s also a good idea to try to be a bit more defensive and careful in combat. Try to look out for openings where you can attack, or learn enemies’ attack patterns and go for parries or timely dodges to gain the upper hand. Attacking and moving wildly will just tire you out, making you easy prey!

Don’t Stress Too Much About Your Build

Build Stress

Our final tip for any starter in Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is to not fret too much about what you do with your build. You might think that you’re messing up by spreading out your Skills and Stats across a variety of different things, but that’s not true in this game. In fact, hybrid builds are encouraged to give you more options in combat!

On top of that, you can also find Origin Potions fairly often in the world. Drinking these potions will allow you to reset your Skills and Stats. You can then reallocate them however you see fit. Due to how plentiful these potions are and how friendly the game is to hybrid builds, you can progress without stressing about minmaxing.

So, there you have it! That’s our starter guide for Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon. We hope it helps you dive into the world of Avalon with a tad more ease than just going in blind.

Gamer cursed by being interested by most games, resulting in a ridiculous backlog he’ll never be able to conquer. Been gaming for over two decades now! Few things exemplify his wide variety in gaming tastes as the fact that he’s a big fan of both Souls games and the Atelier series at the same time. Also a big fan of Yakuza/Like a Dragon, Deadly Premonition, Zero Escape, and Dead Rising, among others. Considers Lost Judgment and Sekiro to both be masterpieces.
