It’s a good idea to learn how to fish as early as possible in Rust, since it’s a great way to get materials and Scrap.

Fishing is also pretty simple in this game, once you get past the initial setup. It doesn’t require anything too crazy, and the minigame itself isn’t too challenging to get used to!

In this guide, I’ll tell you everything you need to fish in this game.

Get a Fishing Rod and Bait

The first thing you’ll need to do to start fishing is to get a fishing rod. There are a few ways to do that, such as purchasing it from NPCs at any fishing village you encounter.

Alternatively, you can craft your very own Handmade Fishing Rod by using 2 Rope and 200 Wood. You can get the Rope from looting or recycling clothes, while you mainly get the Wood from chopping trees.

Either way, the Handmade Fishing Rod is the only fishing rod currently in the game. So, you’ll get the same type of fishing rod regardless. No missing out if you don’t find a fishing village, for example!

In addition to the fishing rod, you’ll also need bait. You can buy some types of bait, like Worms and Grubs, from NPCs in fishing villages.

Alternatively, you can also get bait through foraging, hunting, and looting food boxes. Most types of Food can be used as bait, so there’s a lot of potential bait out there!

If you want to know if a type of food can be used as bait, look for its “Bait” stat. The higher this is, the more value it has, which means you’ll catch better fish.

Once you’ve got the fishing rod and some bait, you’re ready to start fishing.

How to Fish

Now that you have everything to start fishing, you’ll first need to open your inventory. Make sure to equip your Handmade Fishing Rod to your hotbar, then select the fishing rod itself.

While the Handmade Fishing Rod is selected, it’s time to set some Bait on it! For that, select the Food items you want to use as bait or drag them and drop them on your fishing rod. The end result should like the example above.

With that set, bring out your fishing rod while you’re near a body of water. Then, press Right Click (PC) or Left Trigger (Console) to start aiming. Use the blue bobber as a guide for where you’re casting, then press Left Click (PC) or Right Trigger (Console) to confirm.

Once you notice the bobber start moving, that means a fish is on the line. Press Left Click (PC) or Right Trigger (Console) to start trying to catch it!

When you’ve hooked a fish, you’ll need to use A and D (PC) or the Left Stick (Controller) to move your fishing rod to the side. Move opposite of the fish to tire it out. Then press S or Left Click (PC) or Right Trigger (Console) to reel it in.

As you do this, make absolutely sure that your bobber never leaves your view. If the fish takes the bobber out of your view, it’ll escape and result in a failed attempt.

Additionally, do not reel in when the fish is moving around too much, as that will break your line. You’ll notice your line is about to break when you notice your fishing rod shaking and start hearing creaking noises.

Conversely, you’ll successfully fish if you manage to reel the fish all the way towards you without losing sight of the bobber or breaking the line. That’s all there is to it!

Wrapping Up

Ultimately, it’s pretty easy to learn how to fish in Rust. Getting the Handmade Fishing Rod doesn’t require much effort, and Bait is plentiful.

The fishing minigame itself is also fairly straightforward. You just need to make sure to tire the fish out first and only reel in when the fish isn’t struggling. Pay attention to your rod so you don’t break the line and you’ll be fine.

Hopefully, this guide helped you on your journey to being a Rust fisherman! Good luck catching some of the trickier fish out there.
