One of the most interesting systems introduced in Path of Exile 2 is beast taming. Instead of relying solely on traditional minions, you can capture powerful rare monsters and turn them into your companions.
Since the release of the Huntress and the companion-focused updates, Tame Beast has evolved into a legitimate source of utility, damage, and build support. This is especially true with the release of the Spirit Walker ascendancy in the Return of the Ancients update.
That said, if you want the strongest companion possible, you need to understand how Tame Beast works. Let’s take a look.
How Tame Beast Works in Path of Exile 2

For starters, Tame Beast is a skill gem that allows you to capture rare Beast-type enemies. When you cast the skill, Azmeri wisps will surround your target, and if the beast dies while affected by the wisps, it becomes permanently stored inside the gem and can later be summoned as a companion.
It’s basically Pokémon but in a different game!
That said, the Tame Beast skill has a duration of roughly 9.2 seconds. Which means you only have 9.2 seconds after casting the skill to defeat your target.
Once its effect expires, you can simply cast the skill again. Due to this, I highly recommend casting the skill only when your target has little remaining HP to the point that you can kill it in one shot.

You can tell if the effect is active if you see these blue glowing wisps surrounding your target.
Note: Summoning a captured Beast as a companion requires a 42% reservation of your Spirit. This is something to keep in mind, especially if you’re running Heralds.
The captured creature retains up to four of its rare monster modifiers. These modifiers are often the real reason why players farm companions because they can provide powerful buffs, debuffs, auras, crowd control effects, and additional utility.
Even better, the newly released Spirit Walker ascendancy allows you to capture even unique beasts. This means you can now have the Mighty Silverfist in your command!
That said, companions are classified as minions and benefit from minion scaling. This means increases to minion damage, survivability, and related passive nodes will improve their overall effectiveness.
How to Get the Best Companion

In general, the best and strongest companions fall into three categories:
- Fast melee beasts for mapping
- Companions with powerful Auras that improve player damage or survivability
- Boss-focused companions with high durability and reliable single-target damage
For general mapping, speed is no doubt king.
This is where agile beasts feel much better than slow, tanky creatures as they can keep up with fast-paced gameplay.
If you are playing a companion-focused Huntress build after the newest updates, beast bosses have become increasingly attractive. The Return of the Ancients update introduced additional support for taming stronger creatures, allowing companion builds to scale much higher than before.
Some of the strongest endgame setups now revolve around specialized beast companions rather than traditional summons.

Many players spend hours searching for the perfect beast only to find out that modifiers matter more than the monster.
A mediocre beast with excellent affixes will usually outperform an amazing beast with poor affixes. Hence, when looking for a potential companion, you want to look for modifiers that provide:
- Movement speed
- Attack speed
- Cast speed
- Beneficial auras
- Defensive buffs
- Reliable crowd control
- Damage-enhancing effects
These bonuses affect both the companion’s performance and, in many cases, the overall effectiveness of your build. It’s for this reason that you see experienced players repeatedly reset specific farming zones.

The process is simple. First, you want to find a zone with a guaranteed rare beast. Once you find your target, check its modifiers. If the modifiers are bad, reset the instance. Rinse and repeat until you find a desirable combination.
This method dramatically reduces the time required to find companion rolls and remains one of the most efficient farming techniques available.
Final Thoughts
That’s the basics of the Tame Beast ability in Path of Exile 2. If you are just starting, I recommend capturing a fast-moving beast such as a Quadrilla, learning how modifier farming works, and gradually upgrading as you progress into maps.
Once you begin targeting high-value affixes, you will quickly understand why so many players consider Tame Beast one of the most rewarding systems currently available in the game.
