The Genesis Tree is one of the most interesting systems introduced to the current endgame of Path of Exile 2. Unlike the Atlas Passive Tree, which focuses on map mechanics and endgame encounters, the Genesis Tree is tied directly to the game’s new crafting ecosystem.

This way, you can influence the creation of jewelry, belts, catalysts, and other valuable rewards.

Since the Genesis Tree is a new addition to the Return of the Ancients update, many players who haven’t played Path of Exile 1 might get confused. The interface shows tons of locked branches and powerful nodes, but the game does not clearly explain how those branches become available.

Don’t worry. I got you covered in this guide as we look at exactly how you can unlock the Genesis Tree branches.

How to Unlock Genesis Tree Branches in Path of Exile 2

The Genesis Tree uses a growth mechanic. It doesn’t reveal its entire structure right off the bat. Instead, you have to interact with its crafting materials to open up new pathways.

This is done through the use of Wombgifts. When you craft a specific type of item via the Genesis Tree using a Wombgift, it then expands the tree and reveals nodes associated with that crafting path.

The entire process is actually pretty simple.

First, you need to obtain Wombgifts by running Breach encounters in your maps. They can drop randomly in things like active Breaches, Breach Hives, and Breach bosses. At the same time, these encounters will grant you Hiveblood which is used as a fuel for growing your Genesis Tree.

Wombgift Genesis Tree Path of Exile 2

Once you have a Wombgift and enough Hiveblood, interact with the Genesis Tree and place your Wombgift into its appropriate slot. Then, click the small button at the bottom to grant you a random item depending on the type of Wombgift you placed.

There are five different types of Wombgifts, namely:

  • Lavish Wombgift for Currency
  • Banded Wombgift for Belts
  • Revelatory Wombgift for Breachstones
  • Ornate Wombgift for Amulets
  • Signet Wombgift for Rings

Whenever the Genesis Tree gets enough Hiveblood, it will then grant you skill points. You can then allocate these points to the passive nodes on the tree. Doing so will expand the branches of the tree based on where you allocate those points.

You can see your current progress at the top of the screen. Once you fill the bar, you will get a passive skill point.

Things to Keep in Mind

It’s worth noting that you can’t unlock all of the branches of the Genesis Tree. As such, you have to choose where you want to allocate your points depending on which outcomes you prefer.

Currency Nodes Path of Exile 2

If you want to focus on Currencies, you can path to the nodes that increase the chances of getting another currency of the same type.

For example, the For the Price of One notable lets you birth an additional item of the same type when birthing Exalted Orbs. This means you can get double the Exalted Orb each time you get one.

Resistance Nodes Path of Exile 2

Meanwhile, if you want items that grant resistances, you can take the Imbue the Body notable and choose which resistance appears on a birthed item.

The Genesis Tree is designed in a way that you have to specialize instead of allocating every available path. So as much as possible, try to focus only on branches that will give you the type of item that you need.

Fortunately, you can respec the tree anytime you want. This lets you change which branches you want to unlock next so you can focus on birthing different item types.

Final Thoughts

As you can see, the Genesis Tree system is actually a simple mechanic once you understand how it works. To unlock branches, feed it with Wombgifts using Hiveblood, get a random item, and then obtain skill points once you have progressed enough.

This system was already introduced months ago in the previous Path of Exile game, so seeing it in Path of Exile 2 is a bit exciting.
