They are primarily used to get some endgame weapons, such as the Defender III weapon sets. As already said, though, Commendations are pretty rare materials!

How to Get Commendations in Monster Hunter: World
Commendations can only be earned once you have access to, at the bare minimum, 5 Star Quests.

Pro Tip: If you want to complete challenging quests in no time and with less effort, joining an expedition can be extremely handy.
They are obtained as Quest Rewards, at least, so you don’t need to rely on farming or random chance to get them!
However, the number of quests that give you Commendations as a reward is extremely limited, with only 7 quests in the entire game rewarding them.
Nonetheless, these are the quests you should complete if you wish to get Commendations:
- A Colossal Task (6 Star)
- Gaze Upon the Dawn (6 Star)
- Gone in a Flash (5 Star)
- Kirin The Myth (5 Star)
- Left Quite the Impression (6 Star)
- Redefining the “Power Couple” (5 Star)
- The Poison Posse (5 Star)
These quests start to unlock once you reach Hunter Rank 8 at the earliest. However, you won’t unlock all of them until you reach Hunter Rank 11!
Luckily, you will get 1 guaranteed Commendation every single time you complete any of these quests.
You have a 1% chance to get an extra Commendation as a reward. It’s a pitifully low chance, but you might just luck out!
But there you have it, this is the only way to get Commendations in Monster Hunter: World and Iceborne.
You’ll have to repeatedly complete whichever of these quests you find the easiest until you have enough Commendations for your liking. Good luck out there, Hunter!
