If you’ve been running around Hytale wondering how to make glass, you’re not alone. I went through the same thing, travelled forever, mined sand, fired up a furnace, and thought I was about to start building clean, modern structures.

Spoiler alert: the game had other plans. Let’s break down how glass actually works in Hytale right now, what you can make, and why your dream of perfect glass windows might have to wait.

What Is Glass Used For in Hytale (Right Now)

Here’s a video on making glass to craft an Empty Potion Bottle in Hytale.

At the time of writing, glass in Hytale is very limited. The only actual glass-related item you can craft is an Empty Potion Bottle. That’s it. No full glass blocks, no glass panes, and definitely no fancy transparent walls for shaped buildings. Trust me, it’s frustrating, especially if you’re the type who likes clean architecture instead of wooden boxes.

The process itself is straightforward. You take sand, bring it to a furnace, put it in, and turn it on. Once it’s done smelting, you end up with an empty potion bottle. That’s currently the game’s definition of “glass.”

The good news is that this strongly hints at how future glass items will work. As more glass materials are added, they’ll almost certainly follow the same formula: collect sand, smelt it in a furnace, and craft from there.

How to Get Sand in Hytale (Not Sandstone Rubble)

This part confused a lot of people, including me. If you’re only getting sandstone rubble, you’re probably mining in the wrong spot or breaking the wrong blocks. Actual sand comes from deserts and beaches. Once you find those biomes, you can collect real sand blocks instead of rubble. Yes, this means you might end up travelling far just to fill your inventory with sand, only to come back and realize you can’t make glass blocks yet. Painful, I know.

I personally spent a solid hour heading to the beach, grabbing around 200 sand blocks, smelting everything, and then realizing none of it could be turned into windows. That moment hurt.

How to Build Windows in Hytale?

Here’s a video on making windows and building glass from the Builder’s Workbench in Hytale.

If what you’re really after is windows for your build, Hytale currently handles that in a completely different way. Instead of glass, you need to use a builder’s workbench. You put in wood, choose the type you want, and then select the window variant for that material. These are wooden windows, not glass panes, and they don’t give that transparent look most builders are craving.

Sadly, there’s no way right now to make a full glass block or a glass pane. If you’re trying to design shaped buildings or modern-looking structures, this limitation is genuinely annoying. The building system clearly has potential, but glass just hasn’t caught up yet.

Final Thoughts

So, yes, glass technically exists in Hytale, but only in the form of an empty potion bottle. You get sand from deserts or beaches, smelt it in a furnace, and that’s as far as it goes for now. Windows exist, but they’re crafted from wood at a builder’s workbench, not from glass. If you’re feeling disappointed, you’re definitely not alone. Hopefully, future updates expand glass crafting into proper blocks and panes, because builders are absolutely ready for it.

Until then, at least you won’t waste hours smelting sand expecting glass windows… as I did. And if you’re wondering what to do once you have your glass or your wooden windows, don’t forget to check out my guide on How to Catch Animals in Hytale for a little extra fun. Time to put animals into a box! Kindly and lovingly, of course.
