The Illusion system lets you keep your stats and ditch the ugly helmet. Sorcery has its uses after all.

Conan Exiles does not have a straightforward hide helmet toggle like a lot of survival games do. If you want to show your character’s face without giving up the stats on your headgear, you need to use the Illusion system, which was added with the Age of Sorcery update. It is essentially a transmog system that lets you apply the appearance of one item onto another while keeping the stats of the original.

The process involves the Thaumaturgy Bench and requires sorcery to be unlocked first. It is not complicated once you know what you are doing. In this guide, I will walk you through the whole thing step by step.

Making Your Helmet Disappear

To unlock Sorcery, you need to visit the Shaleback Hollow. If you are not sure where it is, then check the map given below for its exact location.

Once you get there head into the cave and keep moving straight. You will run into some enemies along the way but you do not need to fight them. Simply sidestep when they lunge at you and keep pushing forward without stopping.

Eventually you will reach a set of platforms. Head up those and you will arrive at a room with a book sitting on a table. Interact with the book and you will learn Sorcery.

Here’s a short clip showing how to navigate the cave and reach the book which unlocks Sorcery.

Changing the Appearance of your Helmet

Once you unlock Sorcery, take a moment to look around the cave before leaving as there is some decent loot tucked away in there. Once you are done, head back to your base.

Back at your base, open the “Crafting Stations” menu and navigate to the “Sorcery” tab. You will find the Thaumaturgy Bench listed there. It costs 300 Stone, 50 Crystal, and 50 Iron Bars to build. Place it down somewhere accessible.

After placing it down, interact with it. Place the helmet you want to change the appearance of into the “Source Stats” box. This is the slot for the item whose stats you want to keep. Next, place something very small like earrings or circlets into the “Appearance” box.

This is the key part of the whole process. By putting something tiny in the “Appearance” slot the resulting item will either be completely invisible or barely noticeable when equipped. Click Combine and you will get the Illusion headgear. Equip it and your character’s face will be fully visible without sacrificing any of the helmet’s stats.

My personal go-to for the “Appearance” slot is Iron Earrings. They are extremely small and practically invisible once equipped. Especially if your character has longer hair. They are easy to craft and do the job perfectly every time.

That’s It

That is all there is to hiding your helmet in Conan Exiles. It is not the most intuitive system and requiring sorcery just to change how your headgear looks is a bit of an odd design choice. But once the Thaumaturgy Bench is set up, the whole process takes about thirty seconds and you will never have to choose between good stats and a good looking character again.
