Fields of Mistria just got an Early Access release on Steam and for those of you that are still not familiar, it is basically a farming simulator with RPG mechanics that are pretty similar to the likes of Stardew Valley and Harvest Moon.
In Fields of Mistria, you will be helping the beautiful and enchanting town of Mistria after it was devastated by an earthquake. Other than the normal stuff (such as farming, fishing, bonding with Villagers, etc.), there is also an awesome story for you to experience.
Ultimate Beginners Guide
In this guide, I will go over everything you need to know to play the game to the fullest. If you just started out or are planning on playing the game then you will find this guide pretty helpful! Without further ado, let’s first get started with the HUD.
HUD
Health Bar
The red bar indicates the amount of health you have.
Stamina Bar
The green bar indicates the amount of stamina you currently have.
Mana
Mana is required for performing spells which are unlocked when you descend deeper into the mines. Mana is replenished over the course of a few days or by using mana items.
Buffs | Debuffs
The buffs or debuffs that your character is under will be shown in the area below your Mana. Most of them will have a timer bar underneath which shows the amount of time they will last for.
Mining Floor | Location
This number shows the floor that you are currently on when you are inside the mines. When outside the mines, the name of the location you are in will be shown instead.
Hotbar
The bar at the bottom shows the items that your character currently has. You can equip tools through this as well. At the start of the game, you will only have one Hotbar which is represented by “A”. But later on you can expand this and get more Hotbars such as “B” and so on.
Weather
This icon represents the current weather inside your game.
Season
This is the name of the season that is currently underway in your game.
Time
The current in-game time is shown here. Some events are time bound so this is pretty handy.
Tesserae
The currency of this game is called Tesserae. It is used for getting a lot of things in the game.
Essence
Performing various tasks such as mining, fishing, etc. will get you Essence. This is then later used to get skill upgrades.
Day and Date
The in-game day and date are shown here.
Spell
This is the shortcut for performing your Spell. You can equip any one skill here as you like.
Map
Shortcut for opening the map.
Main Menu
Shortcut for opening the main menu.
Health
In some areas (such as the mines), the game will display your Health bar. This is because in those areas, you can encounter mobs and die. If your Health reaches zero, you will be taken to Valen’s office which will end your day. You will wake up on the next day at 10:00 AM.
Stamina
Stamina is required for performing a lot of your tasks and once it reaches zero, you won’t be able to do them. There are various ways of replenishing your stamina such as eating foods or taking a quick dip in Juniper’s Bathhouse.
Character Customization
When you start out the game, you will be greeted with the character customization menu which is pretty standard for most RPGs. The character customization of this game is pretty extensive and when paired with its pixelated art style, it looks very awesome.
You can change the features, hairstyle, clothes, accessories, and even the pronouns of your character. And each item itself also has various color options.
If you are having trouble customizing your character due to the plethora of options available, then do not worry as it is not permanent. You are allowed to customize your character anytime you want during the game. And you can also save outfit presets and later on change into them pretty easily whenever you want.
Basic Movement
One of the most awesome things about this game is the flexible movement set it offers. You can easily swim in the game from the get-go without any requirements. And not only this, you can also jump. Through jumping, you can easily traverse over gaps and small rocks without having to mine them.
Quick Tip: When swimming around, you will find small circles such as the one marked in the image below. These will give you an item when you interact with them.
Map
To have an easier time exploring the town of Mistria, the game offers a pretty detailed map of the various locations. It also shows the locations of the villagers. If the icon of the villager is gray then it means you have not interacted with that villager as of yet.
Quick Tip: If you want to quickly get familiar with all the villagers then head to the Inn on Friday after 6:00 PM. Every night on Friday, all the villagers gather around in the Inn.
Town Rank
One of your goals in Mistria is to raise its town rank. You can do that by earning renown. You can get renown by selling items, completing quests (requests from villagers) or by donating to The Museum. Getting to each town rank will also reward you with various items. Following are the town ranks available right now in the order you unlock them:
Wood
Stone
Copper
Ruby
Iron
Sapphire
Silver
Emerald
Gold
Diamond
Mistril
Renown Summary
When your day is over (such as going to bed or passing out), you will get a handy renown summary which shows the amount of renown you earned and through which activity.
Quick Tip: As you can see in the image above, completing quests is the best way of getting a lot of renown.
Rewards
Once you reach a town rank, you can get its rewards from the chest that is located to the left of the quest board.
Quests
Interacting with the quest board shows all the requests of the villagers that are available. These quests have no time limit so I suggest accepting all of them.
Most of the quests will require you to get certain items and once you get them, simply make your way to the quest giver and interact with them. This will complete that quest and you will get your reward.
The Museum
You can donate certain items at the Museum to complete various sets and get rewards for doing so. The Museum is located in The Narrows. Once you get inside The Museum, simply interact with the book on the table. You will get an option to either “Donate” or “View the Wings”.
Donation
Selecting “Donate” will open the menu shown below. Here you can donate items from your inventory that are highlighted. Items which are grayed out can not be donated. Donated items will automatically go into their respective sets.
Wings
Clicking on “View the Wings” will present you with the screen shown below. There are a total of 4 wings which are Archaeology, Fish, Flora and Insects.
Sets
Under each wing, you will find a list of sets. Each set requires 5 items of the corresponding nature to be completed.
Skill Upgrades (Perks)
By the 3rd day in the game, you will unlock Caldarus’s statue in your village through which you can unlock perks for your skills. Unlocking skill perks require Essence which you can get through everyday activities such as farming, mining, fishing, etc.
All Skills
There are a total of 7 skills that you can get perks for from the Caldarus’s statue in your village:
Farming
Fishing
Archaeology
Cooking
Ranching
Woodcrafting
Blacksmithing
Tiers
Each skill will have multiple tiers. With each tier having 4 perks. Tiers are unlocked at 15 level intervals. To learn more about the perk, simply click on it. The better the perk the more Essence it will cost.
Mining
On the 6th day of Spring, you will get the quest for “Re-opening The Mines”. You will also need to reach Stone Town Rank to be able to open the mines. Before mining, make sure you have completed the “Do Bro a Favor” quest (which you can get from the quest board) as it offers you with a Pickaxe.
In the mines, you can get various types of ores. But be careful as you will also encounter mobs which do a pretty decent amount of damage. I suggest you take health and stamina items with you before venturing into the mines.
Elevator
Every 5 floors, you will find an elevator which lets you easily travel back and forth to that floor.
Combat Skill
On the first floor of the mines, you will find another Caldarus’s statue. This statue allows you to unlock perks for the Combat and Mining skills.
Farming
Unlike mining, farming is very relaxing. The method for farming is pretty straightforward. You first plough the earth with a Hoe and then plant your seeds there. After that, you need to water them everyday until they are fully grown at which point you can simply collect them. To increase the area of your farm, you need to use the Shovel.
How to get the farming tools
You will get the required tools and some seeds in the first few days of the game as part of the tutorial. And you can buy the Shovel from the general store for 500 Tesserae.
Ranching
To get started with ranching, you first need to obtain animal housings. You can buy various animal housing blueprints with Tesserae from the Carpenter’s Shop. After that you will need to gather the materials required for building that animal housing.
Once you have built the animal housing, you need to adopt animals. You can do that through Hayden’s Farm which is located south of your farm.
Quick Tip: If you let out your animals, make sure to get them back in later. They won’t get back inside on their own and if left for a long time, they will get upset with you.
Breeding
You can also breed your animals by feeding them Heart Shaped Treats which you can buy from Hayden’s Shop. Before feeding, make sure you have free space and the animals have at least 2 Hearts.
Fishing
For fishing, you first need to obtain a Fishing Rod. You can get the Worn Fishing Rod from the Tackle Shop for 500 Tesserae. It is located at the Beach.
Fishing is very easy in this game. You just cast out your fishing rod and wait for a fish to bite. The moment a fish bites, simply pull back your fishing rod to catch it.
The shadow of the fish indicates how big it is and usually the bigger the fish, the rarer it is. You can later on sell the fish for Tesserae or donate it to The Museum.
Archaeology
In the archaeology site and various other locations throughout Mistria, you will find circular spots like the ones marked in the image above. Use a Pickaxe or a Shovel to dig the item hidden underneath.
Villagers and Relationships
In the town of Mistria, you will find a lot of colorful personalities. With each villager having their own unique dialogues. You can also romance whoever you like by increasing your relationship with them. Which you can do so by gifting them items that they either like or love.
Global Inventory System
One of the most useful features of the game is that it uses a global inventory system. What this means is that whenever you are crafting or cooking, the game will automatically check your chests as well for the required items. So you don’t need to carry the items yourself all the time.
