“Spirit Essence” is a quest available during Episode 4 in Brighter Shores and a fairly unique one at that.

Apparently, there are some items that seem to be possessed by an evil spirit of some sort. Strange happenings surround these items, and certain shady folk seem to be collecting them. What for? Well, that’s up to you to find out!

In this guide, we’ll help you through every step of the “Spirit Essence” quest in Brighter Shores Episode 4.

Spirit Essence Quest Guide

You can start the “Spirit Essence” quest in Episode 4 (Crenopolis) once you reach Level 31 as a Detective in Brighter Shores. Additionally, we recommend reaching at least Level 33 in the Watchman Profession as there’s a boss encounter in this quest. Once you’re ready to start the quest, go to Waltain’s Office in Crenopolis and speak with Captain Waltain.

If you still need to level up a bit more, though, check out our guide on how to level up fast.

After starting the quest, you now have to go investigate at Hamila Jimore’s Hallway. Talk with Hamila there and ask her about the Candelabra.

Once you’ve heard what Hamila has to say, leave and go all the way to the south to The Frog and Barnacle. Talk with the bartender there and inquire about the Mirror.

Then, go west to Lani’s Curiosities and ask Lani about both the Candelabra and Mirror. After the conversation ends, investigate the damaged door and the odd spill on the ground inside the shop. Talk with Lani after investigating and ask about the door.

Lani will tell you about how the gate to the Vestere Hall is locked, but gives you some Metal-Softening Cream that should help you get in!

With that cream in your inventory, head to Vestere Drive north of Hamila Jimore’s Garden. Use the Metal-Softening Cream on the eastern gate. It’ll allow you to bend the bars and squeeze into the Vestere Hall Entrance!

Vestere Hall Entrance Puzzle

Now that you’re inside the Vestere Hall Entrance area, you have to solve the puzzle in the eastern wall. You have to assemble the picture shown above, although you won’t have the pieces to start with. Go north to the Vestere Hall Dining Room first and investigate all interactable objects there to get the puzzle pieces. Use your Senses ability to reveal them.

Once you have all the puzzle pieces, go back to the Vestere Hall Entrance and interact with the puzzle. Assemble it so that it looks exactly like the image above. The wall will move and reveal the Vestere Hall Strongroom. Invite yourself in and investigate it!

Inside the Vestere Hall Strongroom, take the nearby Portrait and Nermal’s Journal. Read the journal to find out that there are 8 items that contain the essence of an Evil Spirit. Return to Waltain’s Office and report to Captain Waltain there.

Watch the cutscene with Captain Waltain and then talk with him. He’ll tell you that he has one of the items locked up in a strongbox already and tells you to put the Portrait away inside another strongbox. Use the one on the far right, you can use the code 1007 to open it. Talk with Captain Waltain after you put it away and he’ll tell you to go to the Merchant’s Guild.

Entering the Deep Sewers

So, following the captain’s orders, go to the eastern part of Crenopolis to find the Merchant’s Guild. Talk with Baldwin Vranc about the possessed items.

Your next goal is to go to the Council Office northeast of the Merchant’s Guild. Ask the Crenopolis Planning Officer about the Metal Gate in the Sewers and she’ll tell you that you require a Form 391d first. They really have us dealing with paperwork for this quest, huh?

Nothing to do at this point but to go all the way back to Waltain’s Office. Ask Captain Waltain for the Form 391d and he’ll give it to you. Return to the Council Office and show the Form 391d to the Crenopolis Planning Officer and she’ll give you the Sewer Key. This means you’ve got even more walking to do for this quest!

Don’t worry though, the “Spirit Essence” quest in Brighter Shores is almost nearing its end. Just make your way to the Sewer Pool room inside the Sewers. It’s the northernmost part of Crenopolis.

Interact with the Metal Gate in the northeastern corner and use the Sewer Key to open it. Prepare yourself for a boss fight and go past the Metal Gate to enter the Deep Sewers!

Taking Down Firrick

A cutscene will start as soon as you enter the Deep Sewers. You’ll see Firrick the Mage attempting to resurrect an Evil Spirit using the possessed items. He’ll notice you eventually, though, initiating a boss fight with him.

Now, Firrick is a fairly simple boss. The one thing of note is that he sporadically casts spells that cover specific parts of the grid. These are signaled by glowing squares, as shown above. Move to another square on the grid as soon as you see these signals or you’ll take extremely heavy Infernae damage. You have a window to drink Potions after you avoid these attacks, so make good use of it!

If you’re having trouble, make sure to check out our guide on how to deal with higher-level monsters for some tips.

Once you defeat Firrick the Mage, loot everything you can from the room. You’ll be unable to take the Glowing Mirror itself, so just leave it for Waltain’s men to deal with later.

To finish up, just go back to Waltain’s Office and talk with Captain Waltain one last time. Give him the items you took from the Deep Sewers and the quest will finally be completed! You’ll get 77,000 Detective XP and 34,300 Watchman XP as your reward.

So, there you have it, that’s the end of our guide for the “Spirit Essence” quest in Brighter Shores. It’s a pretty long quest, with a lot of walking involved, right? However, that massive boost of XP is definitely welcome!
