Borderlands 4 just came out recently, and there are four vault hunters to choose from, as usual. Anybody who has played Borderlands before will know this typical formula, and even with the gameplay changes made with the latest entry, there are still things that ring true even now. In this guide, we will show you one build you can try while leveling up Amon to 50 as you play through the main storyline.

Borderlands 4 – BEST Amon Leveling Build (1 – 50)

The game is easy enough to finish in story mode that you really do not need to min max a build while going through it. This is true for every single one of the Borderlands games, especially since luck with gear drops is what will dictate how fast the average player will reach the endgame anyway.

You could copy the best build in the world while still struggling to clear a single wave of enemies because you can’t find a decent gun or the build itself doesn’t fit your playstyle at all. With that said, having an optimal build will still make it a little easier to reach max level, so you may as well consider trying to take notes at the very least.

What we have for you is a crucible-based build by the YouTuber Moxsy. As one of the few content creators who had very early access to the game, he has already had time to actually test stuff out and reach max level. Take note that gear will require a lot of luck, so we will just go over the skill nodes as these are the ones that are easiest to emulate for everybody.

Just to give you context of how long the game is and how early it currently is in the game’s lifetime, only 6% of Steam players have killed the first major boss as of writing this. A “meta” could form over time, but now is still way too early to tell, especially with patches still coming out to fix stuff. Now, let us get to the nodes that you will want to pay attention to for this build:

  • Get the Lead Out – This increases your reload speed and gets even faster upon triggering a detonation with your abilities.
  • Bolt Action – This node will make your guns deal bonus shock damage for a few seconds every time you reload. With a Jakobs shotgun or pistol, you will be dumping ammo and reloading so fast and often that you will be able to take advantage of this if you have one of the two
  • Endless War – This augment will make primed enemies take bonus gun damage for each stack that they have. Detonating a primed enemy will also cause a forge axe to spawn and find another target.
  • Bellows – This node will increase your gun damage even more whenever you activate your action skill. This is just a good node to have in general as it is a plain damage per second increase.
  • Vital Organs – This is a fine alternative to the previous one as it increases your critical hit chance every time you get a kill.
  • Searing Cold – This augment makes your frost axe apply freeze, while the flame axe will not pass through enemies. Replace your other augment with this once you unlock it.
  • Blast Furnace – With this node, your critical hits with forgedrones or whenever you trigger a detonation will also increase your damage dealt for a few seconds. This can stack multiple times through detonations, so you can get a ton of damage as you get it higher.
  • Lightning Rod – Whenever you deal critical hits with your gun, there is a chance to spawn an elemental bolt that deals shock damage. This can trigger once every 8 seconds.
  • Impetus – This is found in the red skill tree, and it will increase your shield regeneration rate and movement speed every time you get a kill. Handy if you are using a shotgun build.
  • Heavy Plate – This is not necessarily required, but it is probably the best choice in this tree to unlock the next row. It will give you better shield and overshield capacity, which increases your survivability.
  • Gut Punch – Although you won’t be quick meleeing too much, this will make your melee damage and ordnance damage apply weakness to enemies, which makes them more vulnerable while also reducing their damage dealt. Your axes help with this.
  • Tempered Pyre – This makes you spawn an axe forgedrone upon using your forgeskill. Needed for the next node.
  • Twin Tempers – This spawns an extra forgedrone on action skill use, though this one will deal cryo damage.
  • Metal Urge – Increases the cooldown rate of your action skill whenever you deal gun damage, which is going to make your axes even more spammable.
  • Berserk – Whenever you activate your forgeskill, Amon will go berserk for a few seconds, which makes him immune to slows and increases a lot of his damage stats.

And those are the skill nodes that you should be keeping an eye on as you level up, all shown in the order that you will want to take them as you grind to level 50. Again, we will not be going over the items here as it will frequently change a lot as you work towards max level and get to the post-story stuff.

Also, you may want to respec into other trees later on, depending on what types of damage you want or need to deal. Keep on experimenting and you will have your own tailored build that you can easily adjust in the post-game.

As with any Borderlands game, the real grind starts AFTER you reach max level. If you try to grind specific items for builds before that, you are sort of wasting time that you could have spent just grinding EXP through quests and contracts.

Again, you will also start figuring out what build you actually want to try as you play a lot more, and part of the fun of this franchise is figuring out your own little overpowered setup!
