Lava is one of the many natural hazards you will find as you explore the world of Terraria. It can set you and other beings on fire, dealing damage and inflicting a burning effect.
Falling into the lava would likely result in death, which would make you drop your inventory! But will the lava actually burn your items?
Well, read on, and let’s find out if lava affects items or not!
How Lava Interacts with Items in Terraria
The short answer is that lava does burn items. However, there are a lot of “buts” to add to this statement.
First off, lava will only burn items if it covers them more than halfway vertically. It will not burn items if it’s only barely touching them. That means that small puddles of lavas won’t burn any items at all.
Secondly, and more importantly, lava will only burn low-rarity items.
Item rarity is denoted by the item’s text color. White text is the most common rarity, encompassing things like Dirt Blocks and Coins. There are also Gray items that are just junk like Tin Cans.
Lava will only burn Gray and White items. This means that most of your equipment will be completely unharmed if it falls into the lava, as it usually has a much higher rarity.
This means that dropping your inventory into lava isn’t the end of the world! If you can manage to move the lava somewhere else, you will be able to recover most of your items intact.
Of course, you can also just quickly dive into the lava and recover your items, depending on the size of the lava pool and your character’s stats.
However, all coins are of White rarity and will be burned by lava! It’s not as bad as losing your entire inventory, of course, but it’s something to keep in mind.
But as you can see, you don’t need to worry too much when it comes to losing your rare items to lava.
