Best Gear & Spells for a Mage | Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon
Early Game Goodies

Most of the best stuff for a mage build is in the Cuanacht region, but there are still some great goodies you can pick up if you’re still in the Horns of the South region. To start, we recommend going to the Tomb of the Good Druid in the northern part of the region.
Complete the dungeon and lockpick the chest at the end to receive the Battlemage armor set. This set’s pieces will increase your Max Mana, Mana Regeneration, Spell Power, and Magic Critical Chance. Wearing the full set is great for boosting your early-game spellcasting!

As for spells, it’s a good idea to explore the Abandoned Stronghold in the western part of the Horns of the South. You can find the powerful Scorching Blaze and Thunder Lash spells, which are also great for carrying you until you reach Cuanacht.
The Amulet of the Waning Moon is also a great choice at this point. However, it doesn’t have a set spot. Instead, you’ll get it when you interact with 4 Druidic Shrines within Horns of the South. Doing so is worthwhile, though, as this Amulet boosts Spell Power, Magic Critical Chance, and Max Mana by 10%.

Lastly, it’s also a great idea to pick up the Blood Transfusion spell which is in the middle of the blood lake in the southeastern corner of the Horns of the South. We included it in our list of 25 powerful early-game items for good reason! The lifedrain from its Heavy Cast is great for keeping you alive.
Get the Spellgorger Wand

Once you get to Canacth, your first goal should be to pick up the extremely powerful Spellgorger wand. You can find it atop a tower in the Corrupted Temple, which is in the northwestern corner of the region. We have a full guide detailing its exact location if you need help reaching it.
What makes the Spellgorger one of the best pieces of gear for mages is its effects. It massively increases your Spell Power with the downside of it also increasing Mana Costs. Here are its base stats before upgrading:
- 31-35 Damage
- 17 SP
- 50 Block
- Requires 8 Spirituality
- Increases Mana Cost by 50%.
- Increases Spell Power by 75%.

If you wish to upgrade it, you’ll need to use Meteorite Ore. You can find it randomly as you explore or you can purchase it from Beor and Erfyr in Cuanacht city itself. They’re a pair of smithies in the city and they will sell the ore to you after you complete their quest.
Do note that upgrading will also increase the Mana Cost effect alongside the other stats, too. Keep that in mind if you’re already feeling that the default 50% is a tad too much of a strain on your Mana pool. On the upside, Spell Power will also increase!
Life Transfusion

Another great pickup in the Cuanacht region is the Life Transfusion spell. This is pretty much an upgraded version of the Blood Transfusion spell we mentioned earlier in Horns of the South. You can find Life Transfusion by looting it from the outer perimeter of the Derelict Amphitheater, which is marked on the map above. You can also find it within the Corrupted Temple by exploring.
Either way, this spell works pretty much exactly the same as Blood Transfusion before it. The main difference is just that it’s more potent overall, making its Heavy Cast particularly excellent for dealing damage while keeping you alive.
Horned Warden’s Amulet

If you liked the Amulet of the Waning Moon we mentioned previously, the Horned Warden’s Amulet is a must-have for you. Similar to the Amulet of the Waning Moon, you get this Amulet by interacting with 4 different Druidic Shrines within the Cuanacht region. The map above shows all of their locations.
Overall, the Horned Warden’s Amulet is just a straight upgrade over the Amulet of the Waning Moon. It boosts your boosts Spell Power, Magic Critical Chance, and Max Mana by 15%. That’s 5% more, which is pretty nice!
Must-Have Skills

Lastly, let’s finish up this guide on the best gear and spells for a mage in Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon by taking a look at must-have Skills. These Skills are meant to work well in tandem with everything we’ve picked up until now. Here are the recommendations:
- Spirituality, Wands & Cubes – Everything in this section of the tree is worthwhile. We primarily recommend focusing on Arcane Conduit, Wand Mastery, and Energy Feedback Loop. These will boost your Spellgorger’s potency while also giving you a chance to recover Mana to offset the increased costs.
- Spirituality, General & Buffs – Get Mana Battery, Invigorating Energy, Sorcerer’s Efficiency, and Eldritch Desperation in that order. These will be great for survivability, with Eldritch Desperation also giving a massive Spell Power buff when you’re low on Mana.
- Spirituality, Combat – Get Arcane Teachings, Imbibed by the Elements, and Elemental Shock first. Then, work towards Impactful Spellcasting and Arcane Mark on the center bottom of the skill tree.
- Perception, Critical Hits – Last but not least, you want to use this skill tree to boost your Critical Hit Chance. This works particularly well in tandem with Sorcerer’s Efficiency. Get Extra Lucky and Critical Cascade first. Then work towards maxing out Extra Lucky.
As for your Attributes, you mostly just want to focus on Spirituality until you’ve obtained all of the noteworthy skills mentioned above. Once you’ve done that, you can boost your Perception slightly and then go back to fully focusing on Spirituality.
So, there you have it! That’s all of the best gear and spells a mage should aim for in Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon. There’s still a lot more you can find as upgrades, but these should help you find your footing as a powerful spellcaster quickly.
