The Iraqi government has officially banned Roblox, citing child safety, moral concerns, and security risks. The decision, announced on Sunday, follows an investigation by Iraq’s Ministry of Communications, which concluded that the platform exposes children to exploitation, cyber-extortion, and “content incompatible with social values and traditions.”
Why Iraq Banned Roblox
According to the ministry’s statement, the nationwide ban came after a comprehensive study and field monitoring revealed “several security, social, and behavioral risks” tied to Roblox’s user-generated content and in-game communication systems. Officials argued that the platform allows unmonitored interactions between users, putting minors at risk of grooming, blackmail, and exposure to inappropriate material.

The ministry warned that fake websites imitating Roblox steal personal information from Iraqi players, while in-game purchases put financial strain on families. It also reported that excessive screen time fuels digital addiction and social isolation among children and adolescents.
This decision places Iraq among a growing list of Middle Eastern countries tightening regulation over online gaming platforms. Turkey, for example, blocked access to Roblox in August 2024, also citing concerns about child exploitation and online safety.
Roblox’s Response and Global Context
Roblox Corporation has not yet issued an official response regarding the ban. In previous statements about similar restrictions elsewhere, the company emphasized its commitment to following local laws and protecting younger players.
In Iraq, the move follows months of public and governmental scrutiny. Earlier this year, the Strategic Center for Human Rights in Iraq called for a nationwide ban, warning that Roblox “exposes children and teenagers to grave risks,” including access to sexual or violent content. Psychologists in the country have echoed these concerns, pointing to the game’s addictive nature and its impact on moral development.
The Ministry of Communications concluded by reaffirming its commitment to monitoring online games and apps that “violate moral principles or endanger users,” promising closer collaboration with security agencies and educational authorities moving forward.
