First, let’s go over the story-based achievements. These are unmissable and you will obtain them by just going through the game’s story.
Here are all story-based achievements and the order in which you’ll get them:
Volunteer – Thank you for volunteering! Obtained at the start of Chapter 1.
Hired – Become an Aperture employee. Obtained once you complete the entirety of Chapter 1.
To the surface and beyond – Find the elevator to the surface. Unlocks once you take the elevator at the end of Chapter 2.
Upgrade? – Upgrade your portal gun. Unlocks during Chapter 3, once you receive the upgrade to make orange portals.
Journey Complete – Reach the Spire. Unlocks once you complete Chapter 5.
New friends – Find a new companion. Unlocks at the very end of Chapter 6.
Let’s do this one last time – Reach the surface… again. You’ll get this one once you complete Chapter 7.
Back to bed – Destroy the spire. You’ll earn this achievement once you complete Chapter 8 and finish the game!
On top of these story-based achievements, there is one achievement related to a collectible of sorts:
Fingerprinter – Smear your dirty fingers over Aperture’s beautiful glass. You’ll earn this achievement by finding and touching 5 unique glass panels spread across the dozens of test chambers in the story.
These glass panels are found in the following chapters:
With those general achievements out of the way, let’s now go over the rest of the achievements in the game.
Chapter 2 Achievements
Just in Time – Deplete the conveyors’ supply of Weighted Storage Cubes. This achievement is exclusive to the “Conveyors and Ventilators” episode.
You’ll eventually reach a conveyor belt that keeps moving weighted storage cubes as you progress through the chapter. Take all 16 of the cubes off of the belt to earn this achievement.
Sending a Message – Blow up a test chamber sign. This achievement is exclusive to the “Bombs?” episode. Simply use your portals to lead a bomb to the chamber’s sign to blow it up.
Chapter 3 Achievement
Refreshing Shower – Take a shower under one of the gel cleansing fields. The only achievement in this entire chapter and it’s exclusive to the “Gel Cleansing Fields” episode.
Reach the room where a stream of blue goo falls next to a stream of water. First, stand under the blue goo to get dirty, then stand under the stream of water for 1 minute to get the achievement.
Chapter 4 Achievements
Pacifist – Complete the Chamber 4-9 without knocking over any turrets. Chamber 4-9 is also known as the “Turret Playground” episode.
Simply don’t knock over any of the turrets in the chamber. Use weighted cubes to protect yourself from turret fire and only move when you’re fully healed.
Bullseye – Get the ball in 4-10 to land perfectly in the socket. Chamber 4-10 is also known as the “Excursion Funnel Flings” episode.
You’ll need to get a puddle of blue goo near the ledge, then make sure the ball hits the puddle at top speed. It should bounce right into the socket with ease.
Endless Loop – Fling in an endless loop in Chamber 4-11. Also known as the “Cleansing Field Loop” episode.
Look for a pair of slanted surfaces that are on opposite walls as you progress through the chamber. Then place portals on both of them and just enjoy the loop until the achievement pops up.
Supply Chain Problems – Deplete the gel supply in Chamber 4-11. This is the “Cleansing Field Loop” episode, like the previous achievement.
At one point you will reach a button that you can press to summon weighted cubes painted with gel. Just press the button until you summon over 10 cubes to get the achievement.
Chapter 5 Achievement
Still a Pacifist – Complete Chamber 5-1 without destroying any turrets. This chamber is in the “Vacuum Tubes Introduction” episode.
Just like the “Pacifist” achievement, you have to complete the chamber without knocking over any turrets. You don’t have cubes to protect you easily here, though!
Instead, you’ll need to rely on using portals to grab and move turrets to areas where they can’t attack you.
Just make sure that they do not fall over, or they’ll be destroyed, voiding the achievement.
Chapter 6 Achievements
Two Times the Charm – Solve Chamber 6-2 twice. You’ll take an iron staircase at the end of “Vacuum Tubes Reinforcement”.
Instead of exiting the area, use your jumps and portals to return to the start of the chamber and go through the puzzle again.
Captivating Looks – Stare at Conly’s mannequins for a really long time. You’ll be shown the mannequins after the third chamber in this chapter. Look at them for 1 minute to get the achievement.
The Boring Solution – Solve Chamber 6-6 the boring way. Mutually exclusive with “The Fun Solution” so make a manual save first.
For the boring solution, cover the lower part of the chamber with orange goo leading to a portal on the white wall.
Then, put a portal on the white smear on the left wall.
Run over the orange goo to reach the first portal and you will emerge out of the other one, shooting straight to the chamber’s exit. Practical, but it’s indeed rather boring.
The Fun Solution – Solve Chamber 6-6 the fun way. As said previously, this is mutually exclusive with “The Boring Solution”, so save first!
The overall setup for this is the same as the boring solution, so first make sure to cover the lower part of the chamber in orange goo. It should lead to a portal on the lower white wall.
Then, use your portals to cover the small square and the white smear on the adjacent wall with blue goo.
When that’s done, place a portal on the lower white wall with the orange goo and another one on the slanted panel in front of the blue square and wall.
Run over the orange goo into the portal and you will emerge out of the slanted panel, bouncing toward the goal. Impractical, but very amusing!
