Mind Over Magic is a unique management game where you get to build your own magic school, but it can be rough if you don’t know how to get the best start.

Besides the magic school setting, Mind Over Magic’s world is also full of challenges you’ll need to deal with. Surviving is no easy feat, even with magic at your disposal!

In this guide, we’ll give you some tips and tricks that are sure to help any beginner get the best start possible.

Beginner’s Guide for Mind Over Magic

Health Is The Best Stat

Mind Over Magic: Complete Beginner's Guide | Best Start - Health

You’ll get to choose from various randomized staff members when you start a new playthrough of the game. If you want to have the best start possible, make sure to pick whoever has the highest HP!

Generally speaking, you’ll focus on choosing Raven Cult and Vivified classes as they usually have around 200 HP.

Characters with low HP, such as Humans, are pretty undesirable in this game, as they can get one-shot easily if you’re unlucky.

Medical Beds

These KO’s don’t result in you losing the character, sure, but they do result in them gaining a Trauma. While you’ll be able to treat traumas later on, getting a trauma early can quickly snowball into a game over.

Also, make sure to heal your mages using a Medical Bed. All mages will get a debuff as soon as they take at least 1 HP worth of damage, so keep them fully healed.

So, in short, just make sure to focus on choosing the characters with the highest Health, at least early on!

Pay Attention to Conviction

It’s not just physical health that you need to pay attention to, though. You also need to consider your mages’ mental health, which is known as Conviction.

You can keep Conviction high by making sure your mages have proper living facilities, making sure they’re physically healthy, and even by providing proper entertainment and meals.

Having low Conviction will make your mages overall less effective at everything, be it scavenging or fighting.

You’ll need to carefully manage the physical and mental well-being of every staff member and student in your magical school!

Get Researching!

Mind Over Magic: Complete Beginner's Guide | Best Start - Research Tree

Research is, by far, the most important aspect of the early game. If you want to have the best start possible, you’ll want to complete research in the following order:

  • Domesticated Gutberries – Allows you to set up Gutberry farms, which you will need for Repel Fog and also for food. Make sure to get at least 4 farms up and running ASAP!
  • Put Stuff Here – This will allow you to build Storage Boxes for you to safely store any resources you’ve gathered. Events and the weather can damage resources, so it’s a must-have.
  • Shine On – Allows you to build a Magic Lantern that restores MP to your staff and students.
  • Critical Care – Allows you to build Medical Beds, which then allow you to heal injured mages. You should have at least 2 Medical Beds.
Critical Care Research
  • Rustic Gourmet – Grants you the ability to build a Cooking Pot. You can use the Cooking Pot to cook meals, which are better for your mages.
  • Dancing The Night Away – Will let you build an Enchantohpone for entertainment, which keeps your mages’ Conviction up!
  • Basic Rituals – Lets you build a Ritual Sigil. You can use the Ritual Sigil to hire students as staff members or to graduate them to get scrolls which have various helpful effects.

Just make sure to get these researches done as soon as possible and you’ll be guaranteed to have a smooth start!

Repel Fog

One of the ever-present threats in Mind Over Magic is the Fog. This fog will slowly approach your base and will destroy everything if it ever approaches it.

Thankfully, you can use Repel Fog and Superior Repel Fog rituals to push the fog away!

For the early game, focus on using just Repel Fog. Superior Repel Fog is definitely better, just like its name implies, but you won’t have the resources for it until later.

Overall, though, just make sure to keep an eye on the fog and use the Repel Fog rituals whenever needed.

Use The Learning Stone

As you progress in your research, you’ll also be able to teach your students in the magic school. At first, though, you should only use the Learning Stone.

It doesn’t provide any specialization in elements, as it focuses on a very balanced type of education for your students.

Nonetheless, this is more than enough during the early stages of the game.

The main reason to focus on just the Learning Stone is that it will allow you to focus your research elsewhere.

Focused research is the most important part of surviving in this game, so you should save specialized education research for later. Until then, stick to the Learning Stone!

Venezuelan gamer cursed by being interested by most games, resulting in a ridiculous backlog he’ll never be able to conquer. Been gaming for over two decades now!
