The Workshop is your lifeblood in SteamWorld Build, as it’s the building that allows you install extractors in the mines to get resources.

However, sometimes you’ll get an error saying that the Workshop is too small! This will prevent you from installing any more extractors, limiting your resource-gathering potential.

In this guide, we’ll tell you everything you need to know to expand your Workshop and fix this error.

How to Make Your Workshop Larger

The “Workshop too small” error appears because your Workshop doesn’t have any free Extractor Slots.

Extractor Slots are required to place resource-gathering buildings like Oil Extractors, Gas Extractors, and Dirty Water Extractors.

The solution to this is quite simple really: just make your Workshop bigger. A bigger workshop will have more Extractor Slots to work with!

Workshop expansion icon

To expand your Workshop, select it and click on the “Workshop” icon in the toolbar. It looks somewhat like a metallic set of teeth or a bear trap.

Now, you just need to click on where you want to build. Of course, you have to build adjacent to your current Workshop.

Drag and drop to increase the amount of squares to build. More squares will mean more extractor slots, but it will also consume more resources to build!

Thankfully, you can quickly see the results of the expansion before you commit to it. The green numbers with the plus sign next to Extractor Slots let you know how many more slots you’ll get.

The costs below that are, well, the costs of the expansion. These are the Money, Tools, and Boards that you will spend to build.

Just click again once you make up your mind and your Workshop’s expansion will be built! Now, you can go place down whichever extractor was complaining about the small workshop.

Make good use of this to keep expanding your Workshop and installing more extractors so you can get every resource you need!
