Song of the Prairie has a rather unique free-form style of cooking. For one, you can combine ingredients manually which allows you to experiment when making meals.

It’s a fun and unique system compared to most games which just give you a list of recipes to make.

But, how do you even start cooking in this game? This guide will teach you how!

The earliest way to cook is by heading to the Moon Bay Restaurant which you can find in the town highlighted on the map above.

Once you’re there, look for an attendant by the name of JiYue. Exhaust her dialogue until she gives you a meal and asks you if you like it. Pick whichever option you want.

After the dialogue is over, she will permit you to use the kitchen.

You will then get a tutorial telling you how to use the cookware.

Basically, you can manually attempt to cook meals by adding ingredients to the different cookware. If you’re successful, it will create a new recipe.

You can also just use the Menu to list all recipes you know. You will see which meal will be cooked and the ingredients you need. When you’re happy with your selection, just click on “Start Cooking”.

To learn recipes, you will need to experiment using different combinations of cookware and ingredients. Not all combinations will result in a proper recipe, but they should all be edible!

Combinations that don’t count as a “real” recipe will have the prefix “Mystery” in their name. For example, “Mystery Steamed Dish”.

It might take some getting used to, but keep experimenting with things that make sense and you will discover new dishes.

You will also be able to get your very own cookware for your house later in the game. This will expand your options, plus you won’t have to walk all the way to the restaurant anymore.

That’s everything you need to know to get started with cooking in Song of the Prairie!
