New to Ark: Survival Evolved? No problem, this guide covers the best maps for getting started on the epic survival game filled with mega dinosaurs. Whether you want a simple start or a mix of exploration and immersion, this guide has you covered to ensure you pick the right map to start your journey.

#1 – The Island

The best map for beginners is the original: The Island. It’s perfect because it doesn’t have a difficulty modifier that the other maps do. It’s small enough not to overwhelm you, but big enough to feel like you can freely explore and roam. It was made with beginners in mind.

Here is what you can expect:

  • Lower difficulty: There are not as many high-level dinos as you may find in later maps.
  • Easy-to-learn resource layout: The outer part of the island is typically safer. But the more you venture inland, the more dangerous things can become. The resources are spread out on The Island in an easy to learn way.
  • Good starter base areas: This map houses bases such as Herbivore Island and The Beach Bob Beach, all of which are known to be great starter bases.
  • Big enough to be explorative but not big enough to be overwhelming.

Again, this map was created knowing that those who played it on launch would be learning a completely new game. Thus, it is the best map to start on when starting your adventure.

#2 — Fjordur

This has a Norse mythology setting and is the newest to be added to the game. It is seen as a great map for beginners because it combines almost all of the resources and creatures from previous maps into this one.

Here is what you can expect on Fjordur:

  • Tameable horses early in the game.
  • The Andrewsarchus (a new exclusive creature) tames with honey. And honey is easy to get on this map.
  • Metal tools spawn near shipwrecks, which gives you an early advantage.
  • Access to almost 90% of the best creatures.
  • Blends beginner accessibility and long-term potential.
  • Realm Teleportation: Easy to travel across realms.

This map is bigger than The Island, but it really encourages deep exploration. And you can not beat the atmosphere set, between the boss fights, clear progression, and a ton of dinos, you will get lost in this world.

#3 – Ragnarok

This is a true fan-favorite. The Viking setting makes for an immersive gaming experience with tons of terrain to explore. There are tough bosses on this map, but the rewards make it worth it.

Here is what to expect on Ragnarok:

  • Diverse biomes: Grassy fields, frozen mountains, dry deserts, vast oceans.
  • Great bases: Zones like Viking Bay or Lighthouse Highlands.
  • The Griffin: Ragnarok introduced one of the best early flying Greek-inspired animals – the Griffin.
  • Growth of wild veggies: This allows for early horse taming, which is a HUGE asset in the early game.

These more advanced features mean you’ll have more to learn, but great long-term value. I don’t recommend it as a starting point due to the additions that the DLC brings, but it is a great map for players who want more depth and immersion once they have the basics down.

#4 – Genesis: Part 2

This recommendation is for players who want more of an exploration experience, not necessarily grinding. If you want to get into the tech of a map, this is the one for you.

Here is what to expect on Genesis: Part 2:

  • Early Gear: A spawn side that gives you a lesser Tek suit. This is perfect to fly around in and just farm anything you come across, especially early game.
  • The Strider: There is early access to the powerful creature.
  • Less Grind: This is more of the fun gear, flying everywhere, taming OP creatures. There is no slow-grind to be had.
  • Still access to a wide variety of creatures and places to explore.

This map is truly Ideal if you want an easier early-game experience. It is still large enough to explore and has tons of activities to complete. But, if you want a quicker experience and less of a grind, this is the map for you.

Final Ratings

And those are my recommended starter maps for Ark: Survival Evolved.

If you are brand new to the game, I recommend The Island as your smartest and safest bet. It scales nicely, always balancing difficulty with level. Once you’ve mastered the basics, I suggest Ragnarok for a more advanced playthrough, as it balances exploration, immersion, and difficulty.

But, if you aren’t quite ready for that leap, try Fjorur. It still has those same great aspects; I just prefer the Nordic atmosphere more from Ragnarok, but I believe it is more beginner-friendly. And then, if you want a more modern take, Genesis: Part 2 is fast-paced and keeps things exciting, as it is a different take on what the game has done previously.

No matter what map you choose, ARK is about learning, adapting, and surviving. And thus brings the age-old science saying: if you don’t adapt, you die.
