Professions are a major mechanic in Wartales. They’re basically jobs that you can assign to your companions to allow them to perform a certain type of work.

For example, you can assign a profession to a companion who’ll then take care of cooking food for your party. Or, you can appoint someone to mine resources for you.

Needless to say, professions are an important aspect of the game. That said, not all professions are created equally. Some are way better than others while a few aren’t even worth taking.

In this guide, we’ll look at all of the professions in the game and tell you which of them are the best.

As of now, there are a total of 10 professions in the game.

There used to be 11 of them, though the developers have removed the Doctor profession during Wartales’ Early Access version.

Let’s have a brief overview of all professions and what each of them has to offer:

  • Alchemist – Allows a unit to brew concoctions as well as other items that your party can use during battle. Also grants a bonus to Dexterity.
  • Angler – When assigned to a unit, it unlocks the fishing mechanic, allowing them to finish in various spots. Also grants bonuses to Willpower and critical hit.
  • Bard – Allows a unit to learn songs that they can then sing later in the inn. At the same time, it also grants a bonus to Willpower.
  • Blacksmith – A basic profession that allows a unit to craft various pieces of equipment via the forge. Also grants a bonus to Strength.
  • Cook – As the name implies, a unit assigned with this profession can cook various food items via the cooking pot. Also grants a bonus to Constitution.
  • Miner – A profession that allows a unit to mine resources such as iron ores and precious stones. Also grants bonuses to Constitution and Strength.
  • Scholar – This profession is capable of studying codices that are found inside tombs. Also grants a bonus to Willpower.
  • Thief – The only profession that can open locked chests via a lockpicking mechanic. Also grants a bonus to Dexterity.
  • Tinkerer – The only profession that you can access at the start of the game. Associated with crafting various tools and structures. Also grants a bonus to critical hits.

Which are the Best Professions

Now that we’ve had a brief overview of the game’s many professions, let’s now look at the best among them.

Personally, the best professions would be the following:

  • Tinkerer for producing a bunch of free materials while your party is at rest
  • Thief for opening locked chests which are plenty out there in the world as well as stealing loot
  • Cook for preparing food items that you need for your adventure
  • Scholar for deciphering puzzles that you can find inside tombs
  • Alchemist for creating potions that your party will definitely need during battles
  • Blacksmith to make proper equipment for all of your companions

The rest aren’t really all that necessary and some are just used for certain situations.

For example, you’ll only need a miner if you want to gather resources from the mines. Most of the time, you can just assign a prisoner to fulfill this role temporarily.

Even the Scholar is only good in certain situations, especially when delving into tombs. However, it’s definitely a must-have when you do.

Meanwhile, the Bard doesn’t really do that much. You can just think of it as a roleplaying profession.

Since you’re limited to just six professions per party, make sure you only pick the ones that you need during your adventure.
