If you wish to roleplay as a caster in RuneScape: Dragonwilds, it’s a good idea to know about all 6 Mage Staffs currently in the game.

While every staff still serves as a progression upgrade, recent balance changes and combat updates have made some staffs significantly more useful than others depending on your playstyle.

Magic has also become much stronger in co-op and ranged-heavy builds, especially once you unlock higher-tier rune combinations.

Without further ado, let’s talk about all of the Mage Staffs and how to get them.

How to Get All 6 Mage Staffs in RuneScape: Dragonwilds Guide

Ash Battlestaff – Power Level 2

This is the basic entry-level staff in the game, which also means it’s the first one you’ll get of all the 6 Mage Staffs. You automatically get the recipe for this staff once you craft your first Crafting Table.

After that, simply craft it at any Crafting Table with the following materials:

  • Ash Logs x12 – Obtained by chopping down Ash Trees, which are plentiful in every region.
  • Rune Essence x6 – Mine it from Essence Veins and Essence Rocks found all over the world.
  • Coarse Thread x2 – Can be made out of Flax or Coarse Animal Fur at the Spinning Wheel.

You can easily farm Ash Trees and Rune Essence as they’re quite common throughout Bramblemead Valley, making this staff really easy to obtain early.

Now, here are its stats:

  • Durability – 900
  • Damage Multiplier – x1.9 Rune Damage
  • Attack Combo – 4

Even after later balance patches, the Ash Battlestaff still remains viable for early-game exploration and farming weaker enemies.

Grieving Moon Staff – Power Level 3

This upgraded Mage Staff requires two conditions for you to make it.

First, you’ll need to get the recipe as a random drop from Garou Druids. These enemies appear in the Stormtouched Highlands, the Fractured Plains, and the Bloodblight Swamp. As such, they’re extremely common once you leave the starting Bramblemead Valley region.

Second, you’ll need to craft and use a Smithing Anvil. The most notable materials for this crafting station are the Bronze Bars and the Vault Core.

You can get the Bronze Bars by smelting Copper and Tin ores in a Furnace. For the Vault Core, you’ll need to explore any of the many Dragonkin Vaults dotted around the map.

Once you’ve got all of that, approach the Smithing Anvil and use it to craft the Grieving Moon Staff with the following materials:

  • Oak Logs x8 – Get it by chopping down Oak Trees, which are notably darker than Ash Trees.
  • Antler x6 – Obtained as drops from Deer. They spawn in every region except the Whispering Swamp and Bloodblight Swamp.
  • Animal Bone x2 – Random drop from killing any animal.

Lastly, here are the stats for this Mage Staff:

  • Durability – 1050
  • -15% Crit Hit Chance (the game lists it as a positive, so it’s possible it’s actually +15%)
  • Damage Multiplier – x2.6 Rune Damage
  • Attack Combo – 4

Earlier versions of RuneScape: Dragonwilds displayed this crit bonus incorrectly, which caused confusion among players. Current versions properly treat the effect as a positive crit increase.

Despite that fix, this staff is still generally considered more of a transitional upgrade since the Oak Battlestaff usually performs more consistently.

Oak Battlestaff – Power Level 3

The Oak Battlestaff is still one of the most reliable mid-game mage weapons due to its straightforward upgrade path and stable damage output.

Just like the Grieving Moon Staff before it, this Mage Staff requires you to get a Smithing Anvil. However, you don’t need to hunt down the recipe itself, as you should get it automatically. That’s one less step, at least!

Once you’ve made a Smithing Anvil, use it and the following materials to craft the Oak Battlestaff:

  • Oak Logs x8 – Get it by chopping down Oak Trees, which are notably darker than Ash Trees.
  • Anima-Infused Bark x6 – Commonly found at the base of large Anima Trees in the Fractured Plains region.
  • Wool Thread x3 – Can be made at a Spinning Wheel by using Soft Animal Fur x3 or Fleece x1. Both of those drop from various animals.

Now, peep the stats for this strong Mage Staff:

  • Durability – 1050
  • Damage Multiplier – x2.8 Rune Damage
  • Attack Combo – 4

Due to how easy it is to craft, a lot of players now consider this the best mid-game staff for general use.

Blightwood Battlestaff – Power Level 4

Like the Oak Battlestaff, you should have the recipe for the Blightwood Battlestaff as soon as you make a Smithing Anvil. Just like before, you’ll just need to use the Smithing Anvil to be able to craft this one!

Now, here’s the shopping list of materials required for the Blightwood Battlestaff:

  • Blightwood x12 – Obtained by chopping the pale roots of large trees in the Bloodblight Swamp region.
  • Wild Anima x6 – Can be made at a Kiln by using Anima-Infused Bark x4.
  • Swamp Thread x3 – This can be made at the Spinning Wheel by using Swamp Weed x1. You can find the Swamp Weeds all over Bloodblight Swamp.
  • Vault Shard x4 – Obtained by defeating Vault Guardian enemies inside any Dragonkin Vault.

Considering that you will be spending a lot of time in the Bloodblight Swamp, we recommend preparing yourself. The swamp is covered in a poisonous fog that will kill you if you’re unprepared! This makes it one of the deadliest zones in the game.

Make sure to bring plenty of Antipoison potions with you when gathering.

That aside, here are all of the stats for the Blightwood Battlestaff:

  • Durability – 1100
  • Damage Multiplier – x4.1 Rune Damage
  • Attack Combo – 4

Even after several balance patches, the Blightwood Battlestaff is still one of the best all-purpose staves for solo players due to its high damage and easier crafting requirements.

Draconic Staff – Power Level 4

While this staff can be crafted at the Smithing Anvil like most others, you’ll need to hunt down its crafting recipe yourself. You can find it inside a chest along the western wall of the Dragonkin Vault in Ashien’s Watch. That’s found on the northeastern corner of the Fractured Plains, as shown above.

Once you’ve obtained the crafting recipe, use the Smithing Anvil and the following materials:

  • Iron Bar x10 – Can be made at the Furnace by smelting Iron Ore x3.
  • Granite x6 – A dark stone that can be mined in the Stormtouched Highlands region. Requires a Bronze Pickaxe or better.
  • Jade x4 – Randomly obtained by mining Iron Deposits in the Stormtouched Highlands. Requires the Gem Prospector Perk, which unlocks at Level 16 Mining Skill.
  • Vault Shard x4 – Obtained by defeating Vault Guardian enemies inside any Dragonkin Vault.

Lastly, let’s take a look at this Mage Staff’s stats:

  • Durability – 1100
  • Damage Multiplier – x4.1 Rune Damage
  • +15% Crit Hit Chance
  • Attack Combo – 4

After several patches, the Draconic Staff became more popular among players who use aggressive air rune builds. In fact, a lot of players prefer it over the Staff of Light for co-op play as well as high-DPS mage builds.

Staff of Light – Power Level 4 Masterwork

Out of all 6 Mage Staffs in RuneScape: Dragonwilds, this is the only one classified as a Masterwork.

To get the crafting recipe for this one, you’ll need to complete the “Highlighting the Problem” quest. You can do it at the Runecrafting Guild near the Dragonkin Vault on the western part of Bramblemead Valley.

This quest is a relatively lengthy process. If you want more details, check out our full guide on how to get the Staff of Light.

If you’ve already completed the quest and obtained the recipe, you’ll just need to use a Smithing Anvil. Use the following materials at the Smithing Anvil:

  • Blightwood x16 – Obtained by chopping the pale roots of large trees in the Bloodblight Swamp region.
  • Wild Anima x8 – Can be made at a Kiln by using Anima-Infused Bark x4.
  • Sapphire x4 – You can get it by mining Gold Deposits in the Bloodblight Swamp region. Requires the Gem Prospector Perk, which unlocks at Level 16 Mining Skill.
  • Vault Shard x12 – Obtained by defeating Vault Guardian enemies inside any Dragonkin Vault.
  • Vault Core x1 – Obtained as a reward from looting and exploring Dragonkin Vaults.

Lastly, here’s the stats for this Masterwork Mage Staff:

  • Durability – 1300
  • Damage Multiplier – x4.5 Rune Damage
  • Attack Combo – 4

The Staff of Light still offers the highest raw rune damage among the original six staffs. However, more recent patches have caused some players to go for crit-focused setups instead.

Even so, it’s still one of the safest and strongest overall choices for dedicated mage builds, especially during difficult boss encounters or co-op runs. Recent updates also introduced additional late-game regions and expanded magic progression, though the Staff of Light continues to hold its place as one of the best all-around mage weapons currently available.

So, there you have it! That’s how to get all 6 Mage Staffs in RuneScape: Dragonwilds. You now know everything you need about the powerful weapons, so you can make and use any you wish.
