Monster Hunter World is a fast-paced action RPG that is very punishing when you make the slightest mistakes. This is why it is crucial to familiarize yourself with either a keyboard or controller. You might be even using the wrong one!

Some players might not be accustomed to controllers but realize that it is much easier to move around and perform combos with the controller. The same goes for the ones accustomed to using a keyboard.

While this guide might be subjective, you’ll surely get some insight into whether you should use a keyboard or a controller for Monster Hunter World. We’ll weigh the pros and cons of each device and it’ll be up to you to decide your preferred choice.

Should You Play With a Keyboard or Controller?

Let’s take a deep dive into what makes each device better than the other. We may not sway you into using a specific device, but you’ll surely understand why one is better than the other at certain aspects of the game.

Pros and Cons of Using a Controller

Pros

Using a controller will surely feel more comfortable, especially for a game that requires a lot of movement, keybinds, and combos.

The buttons are all closer together, making it easier for you to get a grasp of the combat mechanics. The joysticks are the biggest benefit. Instead of using WASD keys to move, you are using one thumb to streamline your movement.

Apart from using fewer finger and hand movements, you can easily take your controller to different sitting positions. You can even play lying down on the bed or a reclined gaming chair.

Executing combos is much easier too since you only have to rely on a few buttons to press.

Cons

In Monster Hunter World, the biggest problem for controllers is camera control. When you are gliding and performing combos, your camera will be all over the place.

Using the joystick restricts your camera movement because the sensitivity is fixed. With a mouse, you can freely move your wrist, arm, or hand (depending on how you use your mouse) to adjust the camera angles.

Despite the advantages, the camera control can lead people to use the mouse & keyboard.

This issue becomes more pronounced when using ranged weapons against fast-paced monsters. You’ll have to evade and dodge in the right direction while keeping an eye on your combos and the monster’s next attack.

However, there is a new feature in Monster Hunter World Iceborne expansion that allows players to easily lock on to a monster and move around. It may still feel uncomfortable for some, but it is an improvement for sure.

Pros and Cons of Using a Keyboard & Mouse

Pros

On the keyboard and mouse side, the main advantages are the extra keybinds you can set and the added camera mobility with the mouse. Keybinds are adjusted to your preference so you can easily figure out actions in the heat of battle.

Moving the camera at your pace will give you a big advantage when looking at your surroundings or the enemy’s movement.

Cons

The primary challenge with the keyboard and mouse lies in the keybinds as well. The number of keys can easily force you to stutter and press the wrong key when things get stressful.

Nevertheless, experienced players who are used to playing on the keyboard & mouse will ultimately prefer it. Once they get used to all the buttons, they can easily maximize their output for every fight. However, this is still a disadvantage since the learning curve is very steep for a regular player.

Verdict

Overall, the comfort level of playing on either a keyboard & mouse or a controller still varies for each person.

Some may even consider not investing in a controller even if they do prefer it. It is just an added cost for a single game. However, if you do plan on playing other games designed for a controller on the PC, you might as well bite the bullet.

Experiment with what feels best and weigh in the pros and cons on your side. Use whatever feels comfortable.
