The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion just got a remaster, and with all of the new players coming in, most of you probably are not aware that you can craft spells in the game. In this guide, we will try to help you get started with spell making and also share one way to access this feature as early as the time you have just left the Imperial Sewers.
How to Make Your Own Spells in Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion Remastered
Before you start, just know that this will only cover the very basics of the mechanic. This means finding the means to actually make spells and also the things you need to keep in mind when trying to craft one.
First, you must find an altar of spell making. Normally, you would have to join the Mages Guild first, which means going through the long task of getting recommendations from every chapter. If you need help with that, we have a guide for the chapter inBruma that can help you get started.
You do not need to join the guild, though. The remaster also comes with all of the DLCs that the original had, and this includes the Frostcrag Spire house.
This is essentially your very own personal Mages Guild facility, except you do not need to be one of them to use its features. It is found directly to the east of Bruma, and you only need to climb a pretty short mountain to get to it and claim it for yourself.
Technically, you already own it anyway, so you just need to walk in and start buying the upgrades at the Imperial City. Here is where to find it:
Once inside the tower, you will find the altar of spell making in the main room. In order to activate it, you must first buy a box of Magetallow Candles from the Mystic Emporium. This is a store found in the northwestern part of the Imperial City Market District, and it will cost a pretty hefty sum.
With a box of these candles on hand, you can return to the altar and activate it. From there, it should now be completely usable, and you can start experimenting with different spells!
The very basic way to explain how this works is that you are given a list of effects that you can choose from. These are all from spells that you have learned and can already use, so if you are still very early into your playthrough, do not expect to have an extensive selection.
Upon selecting an effect, you can change its magnitude, area, and duration. Take note that higher values, although it makes it more potent, also significantly increase its magicka cost. This is indicated by the lightning bolt icon on the interface.
You can just mess around with whichever effects that you want, and if you want more potent spells, then continue training all of your magic skills and acquire more abilities as you level up higher.
Another thing to keep in mind is that making spells will also cost you gold. This will change as you adjust the spells’ parameters, and it is found on the lower right corner of the spell making interface. Take it easy on the potency at the start as to not burn through your cash stack early on.
Those are the bare basics of how you can craft spells in the game. Just keep on training every school of magic that you want to make spells for. It is really the only way to make more potent custom spells.
If you have just started your playthrough and are still lacking a lot of spells, consider checking out our guide on where to buy the soul trap spell in Oblivion Remastered. This will let you add a particularly useful effect on your spells that also help with enchanting, just in case you are interested in that mechanic as well.
