Getting a map and a Compass is one of your first goals in Hollow Knight: Silksong. Well, it’s not really a hard requirement, mind you… but they definitely help explore Pharloom! Like it or not, Silksong retains the same map system as the original Hollow Knight. To get them, though, you’ll need to meet an NPC called Shakra. We’ll tell you where to find her early on!

How to Get a Map and Compass Early | Hollow Knight: Silksong

As we mentioned before, you’ll need to find Shakra to get the map and compass. The earliest place where you can find Shakra is at the top left section of The Marrow. We know you don’t have a map quite yet, but you can use the one above as a reference! Follow its route to reach Shakra easily.

You can tell that Shakra is nearby when you spot dead enemies and golden rings, which are her weapons. Furthermore, you should be able to hear her singing. She’s quite loud with her singing, so you can even hear her from nearby rooms! Follow the golden rings and her voice to find her easily.

Make sure to learn how to spot these cues. You’ll need them to be able to find Shakra again in other areas later in the game.

When you finally manage to find Shakra, you just need to talk with her. Finish her dialogue and she’ll open up her cartography shop! These are the items you want to get at this point:

  • Mosslands Map – 40 Rosaries
  • Compass – 70 Rosaries

However, you likely don’t have enough to buy them right now. If you don’t, you can farm for Rosaries pretty fast near where Shakra is. We have a dedicated guide for it. But the gist of it is that you just need to go further to the left past Shakra to find enemies that drop Rosaries and a bench. Use the bench to reset the enemies and farm to your heart’s content!

Also, keep in mind that the Compass is a yellow Tool. You’ll need to equip it while sitting at a bench, and it has no effect when not equipped.

Meeting Shakra in Other Places

If you didn’t buy the map and Compass from Shakra at the first meeting, she’ll move on from the area. However, you can freely meet her again by checking the top right corner of the Bone Bottom town.

Once you’re there, just smack the stick with the golden ring on it to summon Shakra. However, sometimes she’s already there, working on her maps. Either way, visit her here to buy anything you’ve missed before.

On that note, you’ll also need to meet Shakra in every new region you reach. That’s why we recommend learning how to spot her due to the ring weapons and her singing. You will need to buy a map from her for every single region. It’s just like how it worked in the original Hollow Knight with Cornifer, pretty much!

Lastly, before closing off, we highly recommend buying the Quill as soon as possible. It will allow Hornet to update maps with new rooms whenever she rests at a bench. After that, buy the pins to mark things like Vendors and Benches. They’re super convenient.

So, there you have it, that’s how to get a map and the Compass in Hollow Knight: Silksong. While you’ll still have to deal with the somewhat controversial map system, this should at least help!
