Know the Materia Types

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: Ultimate Materia Guide - Materia Types

This is something that’s going to be a bit of an obvious point for most Final Fantasy 7 fans. Nonetheless, it’s always important to know the five different Materia types.

These types are all color-coded, so they’re quite easy to differentiate at a glance.

Now, here are all the Materia types in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth:

  • Magic (Green) – One of the most common types, these Materia give you access to new spells such as Fire and Cure.
  • Command (Yellow) – Similar to Magic Materia, but usually leaning more towards Physical attributes than Magical ones. Gives you new Abilities, such as Steal or Jump.
  • Complete (Purple) – A passive Materia. Doesn’t give you any new Abilities, but will instead give you passive effects such as stat increases and even free charges of your ATB Gauge.
  • Support (Blue) – These Support Materia can only be equipped alongside other Materia using Linked Materia Slots. It will enhance the Materia it’s paired with, such as increasing their range.
  • Summon (Red) – Last but not least, this is a unique Materia type that allows you to call forth powerful Summons. Each character can only equip one, and it has a unique equipment slot.

It’s important to understand all of these types of Materia if you want to make the most of them!

Equipping Materia

You can equip your Materia from the “Materia & Equipment” section of the main menu which opens whenever you pause.

As you might imagine, this is only available while you’re outside of combat!

You will then be able to slot your Materia into any of the open Materia Slots on your weapons and accessories.

The number of slots differs for each piece of equipment too, so keep that in mind.

Another important thing to pay attention to is that there are three different types of slots:

  • Regular Materia Slots – These are completely separate from each other and are the most common.
  • Linked Materia Slots – These are rarer in the early game, but they can be differentiated due to them having a middle bar that connects multiple slots.
  • Summon Materia Slot – A unique slot found in the upper right corner of your weapon’s Materia Slots. Red Summon Materia can only be put into this slot.

Linked Materia Slots are most important as they allow you to combine Blue Materia with other Materia. Most Blue Materia won’t have an effect unless they’re paired with others using these Linked Materia Slots, after all.

Meet Chadley!

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: Ultimate Materia Guide - Chadley

During the course of your adventure, you’ll meet Chadley. He’s back from Final Fantasy 7 Remake, and he’ll help you discover new Materia via Materia Research and the Combat Simulator.

The first of these, Materia Research, works like a shop. Except, your Gil is completely useless here! Instead, you will need to accrue Data Points from the various regions across the world.

You’ll get Data Points from completing World Intel objectives. These vary a lot but include things such as catching Chocobo or activating the Remnawave Towers.

They are also separated per region, and each region has a different “shop” of sorts for Materia Research. Keep that in mind as you explore the world, then bring your intel to Chadley for some sweet new Materia!

Chadley's Combat Simulator

As for the Combat Simulator, it’s a tad simpler. You’ll be able to partake in various combat scenarios, most of which will reward you with new Materia upon completion.

Some of the Combat Simulator battles will even pit you against legendary Summons, giving you their Materia if you manage to beat them.

Make sure to bring your best party members to take on these challenges and you’ll be sure to emerge victorious.

Leveling Materia Up

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: Ultimate Materia Guide - Leveling Materia

You can upgrade your Materia easily by leveling them up. This will unlock new abilities and effects, so it’s vital to always make sure you level up Materia when possible!

Thankfully, Materia levels up passively, just like your party members do. Just make sure to equip them and they will gain AP whenever you complete a battle.

Each Materia has a different number of potential levels, seen as stars in their description. You’ll fill up one star whenever your Materia gains a level.

In fact, some Materia can’t even level up at all. What you see is what you get.

The amount of AP required for each level up also varies for each Materia. As you can imagine, stronger Materia take longer to level up, but they’re well worth the effort!

You can speed up the leveling-up process by equipping AP Up Support Materia, which doubles the AP gain for any other linked Materia.

Once a Materia shows that it has MAX AP, it can’t be leveled up any further. All that’s left is to slot it into your gear and make the most out of the powerful benefits!
