Lockpicking returns in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 and it’s even tougher than in the previous game, so it’s a good idea to go over tips and tricks to make it easier.

Lockpicking is one of the Thievery skills in the game. As its name implies, you can use it to pick open locks that you can’t open otherwise. However, you need to complete a pretty rough little minigame each time you want to do it…

In this guide, we’ll give you tips and tricks to help make Henry the best lockpick in land!

Lockpicking Tips & Tricks | Kingdom Come Deliverance 2

The Basics of Lockpicking

Before we go over our tips and tricks, let’s explain the basics of the lockpicking minigame in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2. The main thing to keep in mind here is your cursor, which is the tan ball marked on the image above. You can move your cursor around using the Mouse (keyboard and mouse) or the Right Stick (controller).

First, move the cursor around until it grows larger and starts glowing yellow, like above. That means you’ve found the sweet spot of the current lock. Once you have your cursor on the sweet spot, you need to start rotating the lock. To do so, just press the E key (keyboard and mouse) or L2/LT (controller).

Now, the trick is that you have to rotate your cursor along with the lock. The goal is to keep the cursor hovering over the sweet spot even as the lock rotates. This is much easier said than done, as you might imagine! It doesn’t help that the cursor itself is pretty shaky…

Failing to keep the cursor on the sweet spot can break your lockpick. This also makes noise, so it can reveal your position to nearby NPCs. Be very careful when lockpicking and make sure there’s no one around.

Our first tip here is to not hold the rotate lock button. Tap it instead so that it’s easier to pace the cursor with the rotation. Also, we recommend using keyboard and mouse for this minigame if you’re on PC. It’s much easier overall than using a controller.

But well, that’s really there is to the minigame itself. Now, let’s go over ways to make it easier!

Level Up and Keep Lock Difficulty in Mind

As you might’ve noticed, pickable locks range from Very Easy to Very Hard. This difficulty relates to how easy it is to find the sweet spot and it also relates to your Thievery level. If a lock is too hard for your current Thievery level, you’ll see a message saying it’s simply too difficult. If the difficulty is too high, there might not even be a sweet spot at all until you level up your Thievery!

Conversely, increasing your Thievery level also makes the sweet spot much easier to find. Having a high Thievery level can trivialize lower-difficulty locks, as the sweet spot becomes massive.

So, if you’re having trouble picking certain locks, just focus on leveling up your Thievery first. You gain Thievery experience and levels by doing any action related to it. This can be successfully picking locks, stealing, and pickpocketing.

To help you level up your Thievery, we recommend meeting Bara and Hensel in Troskowitz. Follow Hensel’s quest to learn the ropes of being a thief. This will also give you access to the Lower Semine Mill, which has a box dedicated to practicing lockpicking. Plus, it’s a good source of lockpicks!

Lastly, we also recommend picking up the following Skills:

  • Locksmith (Craftmanship Level 12) – Increases your Thievery by 3 when picking locks. Also, allows you to use scrap iron to make lockpicks.
  • Silent Fiddler (Thievery Level 6) – Makes lockpicking itself silent. This also greatly reduces the amount of noise you make when failing a lockpick attempt.
  • Tool Mastery (Thievery Level 8) – Greatly increases the durability of your lockpicks. You’ll also get a lockpick back if you succeed at lockpicking after a failed attempt.

Use Potions

Since we’ve already told you how important your Thievery level is, the last item on our tips and tricks for lockpicking in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is to use potions. The Quickfinger Potion, in particular, is a must if you wish to pick locks with ease.

The Quickfinger Potion increases your Craftmanship and Thievery levels by 4 for 20 minutes. This makes it easier for you to pick locks, even allowing you to try ones far beyond your natural level. You can get Quickfinger Potions by making them through Alchemy or buying them from various Traders.

So, there you have it, that’s our tips and tricks to help make lockpicking in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 a tad easier. Keep practicing this skill and no lock will ever be a match for you!

Did you know this game also features a secret early ending involving a hanging? It’s not due to any thief-related crimes, though! If you wish to see it for yourself, check out our guide on how to get the secret Hanging ending.
