In Age of Mythology: Retold, choosing which major god your empire will follow is one of the first and most important decisions you will make. Each major god allows for different pantheons, god powers, and many other bonuses throughout the game. So, you need to know which one to pick – we’ve put together a tier list of the best major gods to help you.

Best Gods Tier List

It’s important to remember that this tier list, ranked from best to worst, is entirely subjective. Your opinion may completely differ from mine, since you might prioritise features and resources that I don’t, and vice versa. Everyone plays differently, and this is especially true for strategy games like Age of Mythology: Retold.

So, without further ado, here is our tier list:

Age of Mythology: Retold major god tier list

Don’t worry if you don’t recognise all the icons, as we’ll be going through them all in detail!

S-Tier

There is only one major god we’ve given the title of S-tier to, and that is the Egyptian god, Set.

Set

Age of Mythology: Retold major god Set Egyptian pantheon
God of the desert, storms, disorder, and warfare.

The main reason for Set’s appearance at the very top of the list is due to the unique units he grants. In total, Set allows for eight different animal units which can be trained by the Pharaoh. If you choose Set as your major god, you will also begin the game with a Baboon of Set already part of your empire.

The God power given by SetVision – is also useful, as it reveals an area of the fog of war for 20 seconds. In addition, he grants a technology: Clairvoyance, which removes the favour cost of recasting Vision and reduces its cooldown time. Other bonuses include cheaper costs for Barracks, Siege Works, and Migdol Strongholds.

A-Tier

Four major gods get the honour of being in our A-tier: Greek gods Zeus and Hades, Egyptian god Isis, and Norse god Thor.

Zeus

Age of Mythology: Retold major god Zeus Greek pantheon
God of the sky, weather, law and order, destiny and fate, and kingship.

Easily the greatest aspect that comes with Zeus is his God Power. Bolt allows you to deal an insane 10,000 divine damage to a single unit in the game. As with the other Greek gods, Zeus allows you to take on four different HeroesZeus’ options are Jason, Heracles, Odysseus, and Bellerophon – and the Technology he grants aids this. Olympian Parentage means that any Heroes you get via Zeus will have 25% extra hit points. Handy!

In addition, you get a Myrmidon as a unique unit. This infantry unit deals divine damage to enemies, and completely ignores enemy armour values.

Hades

Age of Mythology: Retold major god Hades Greek pantheon
God of the dead and King of the underworld.

As another of the Greek gods, Hades also allows you to take on four heroes throughout your game: Ajax, Achilles, Chiron, and Perseus are the options Hades grants you. He also gives you two unique units: Gastraphetoros, an archer with a crossbow which is fantastic against buildings, and Shade of Hades. These are myth units which have a 20% chance of appearing at a Temple if a human soldier gets killed.

For a God power, Hades gives you Sentinel, which creates five sentient statues around your target’s Town Centre. These will attack any enemies that come into range. In addition, his Technology, Vaults of Erebus, provide a steady of trickle of gold – 0.75 per second.

Isis

Age of Mythology: Retold major god Isis Egyptian pantheon
Goddess of healing and magic.

While not providing any unique units, Isis makes it into our A-tier on account of her resource boosts. Her God power, Prosperity, allows you to mine gold at double speed for 50 seconds. Also, her TechnologyFlood of the Nile – provides a steady trickle of 0.75 food per second.

Isis, like all the gods, gives you some bonuses as well: mainly, Town and Citadel Centres let you have an extra 5 population. Monuments, an Egypt-specific building, when empowered, will heal nearby units and generate Favour 100% faster.

Thor

Age of Mythology: Retold major god Thor Norse pantheon
God of thunder and lightning, winds and storms, fine weather and fertility.

If choosing Thor as your major god at the beginning of the game, you’ll be able to reap a lot of benefits. Firstly, his God power, Dwarven Mine, gives you a Gold Mine you can place wherever you want. Casting it in later Ages lets it hold more gold and it can be mined faster. The only downside is that any civilisation will be able to mine from it.

Dwarven Armoury is a unique building you get from Thor. This will replace the Armoury, and allows you to research technologies regardless of Age, and enables three additional technologies. This is helpful, as Thor comes with four new technologies:

  • Hammer of Thunder: Gives a buff for extra damage to Hersirs as well as increased favour gain
  • Dwarven Weapons: Human soldiers, heroes, ships, and buildings, all have improved attacks
  • Meteoric Iron Armour: Human units have better armour against hacking damage
  • Dragonscale Shields: Human units have better armour against piercing damage

B-Tier

The most common row in our tier list, there are six major gods in our B-tier. We’ve given B grades to Greek god Poseidon, Norse gods Odin, Loki, and Freyr*, and Atlantean gods Gaia and Oranos.

*Note that Freyr is only available if you have the Premium Edition of Age of Mythology: Retold. While there are no doubt plans to release a buyable version of the expansion for those who have the standard version, it’s not the case just yet.

Poseidon

Age of Mythology: Retold major god Poseidon Greek pantheon
God of the sea, storms, earthquakes, and horses.

As the last of the three Greek gods, Poseidon also grants you four different Heroes: Theseus, Atalanta, Hippolyta, and Polyphemus. In addition, he comes with two unique units. Hippocampus is a naval myth unit scout with no attack. Luckily, it respawns after 60 seconds if killed. Hetairos is a cavalry unit with an Area of Effect attack.

Poseidon’s God power, Lure, allows you to place a stone which draws animals towards it. These can be hunted by villagers. The Technology he grants, Lord of Horses, gives your cavalry units +4 Line of Sight.

Odin

Age of Mythology: Retold major god Odin Norse pantheon
God of war and death.

For a God power, Odin grants you Great Hunt, which increases the number of animals in a specific area. If there are no animals in this area, it will instead spawn a few Elk. In addition, his unique unit is a Raven: you get two of them for free as soon as you build a Temple, they reappear if killed, and are a great scout unit.

Odin only grants you one Technology: Hamask. This allows Berserks to move and attack faster the more hit points they lose, 0.25% for every missing 1% HP. If you can do the maths on that, I salute you.

Loki

Age of Mythology: Retold major god Loki Norse pantheon
God of mischief and chaos.

Although not many benefits from Loki, there are some useful boosts from him if you’re a fan of espionage. His God power, Spy, silently grants you Line of Sight of a targeted enemy unit or animal. Eyes in the Forest, his Technology, increases Line of Sight of Hersirs, Heroes of Ragnarok, and infantry units.

In addition, myth units can spawn by damaging enemy units, and you can transform Gatherers and Dwarves into Berserks for free.

Freyr

Age of Mythology: Retold major god Freyr Norse pantheon
God of fertility, peace, and good weather.

Similar to Loki, Freyr doesn’t come with many benefits, but those he has are fairly useful. Gullinbursti, his God power, allows you to temporarily summon a giant golden boar to defend a friendly Town Centre. This will continue to get more powerful as the Ages advance.

His TechnologyFreyr’s Gift – will give Heroes and human soldiers 25% more hit points once researched. In addition, with Freyr as your chosen god, it is completely free to repair buildings, and Gatherers and Dwarves are also able to repair.

Gaia

Age of Mythology: Retold major god Gaia Atlantean pantheon
Goddess of Earth and mother of all life.

Gaia Forest is the God power granted by having Gaia as your chosen god. This allows you to grow an aspen forest, with its trees providing 200 wood instead of the usual 150. As a Technology, Channels allows all of your units to move faster on Lush.

Gaia also makes it cheaper for you to promote your citizens into heroes, and your economic buildings (Town Centres, Manors, Economic Guilds, and Markets) will grow Lush, which heals your friendly units and buildings.

Oranos

Age of Mythology: Retold major god Oranos Atlantean pantheon
God of the heavens and sky.

Despite not many benefits, Oranos does have one of the best unique buildings in the game. Sky Passage is a tower which can transport up to 30 units to another Sky Passage, and you can build a new one every age.

His God power is Shockwave, which creates (you guessed it) a shockwave! This sends enemy units into the air, gives them some damage, and stuns them for a few seconds. In addition, Empyrian Speed, a new Technology, gives your infantry units +10% movement speed.

C-Tier

Only two major gods in Age of Mythology: Retold have made their way onto the bottom of the list. Egyptian god Ra and Atlantean god Kronos take their places as our least favoured of the gods on offer.

Ra

Age of Mythology: Retold major god Ra Egyptian pantheon
God of the sun, heaven, kingship, power, and light.

Not many useful benefits come from Ra. His God power, Rain, allows allied villagers to farm 200% faster, but enemy villagers can also farm 100% faster. Wood gathering (only for you) is increased by 50%. The Technology he grants, Skin of the Rhino, gives your Labourers less hacking and piercing vulnerability, and more hack attack.

Other bonuses include more HP for Camel Rider, Chariot Archer, and War Elephant, and Priests being able to empower.

Kronos

Age of Mythology: Retold major god Kronos Atlantean pantheon
God of time.

The last of our tier-listed gods, Kronos allows for time-shifting: Temporal Chaos, the new Technology he grants, lets you concurrently Time Shift three buildings. As for a God power, Deconstruction lets you deconstruct an enemy’s building, allowing the full cost of said building to be returned to the enemy. However, it can’t be used against Walls, Gates, Town Centres, Wonders, or Titan Gates.

Other bonuses from Kronos include faster building construction depending on nearby Manors, and receiving two free myth units instead of one when you advance into the next Age.

That’s it for this tier list! Again, these are just opinions, and you might completely disagree with some of our placements, but hopefully, this can help you choose a god for your next game of Age of Mythology: Retold!
