The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion now has a remastered version, and it features all of the iconic stuff from the original as it is mostly just a fresh coat of paint in an otherwise timeless classic. One of the often cited “best” side content in the game involves the Dark Brotherhood faction, which Elder Scrolls fans should be very familiar with. Here is how you join them in Oblivion!

How to Join the Dark Brotherhood in Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion Remastered

Joining the Dark Brotherhood is actually incredibly simple in this game. There is no need to search around for any rumors of kids looking for assassins. No, in Oblivion, all you need to do is kill any innocent NPC.

It does not matter which one, but for the sake of your playthrough, pick an NPC who looks like they would not play a significant part in anything else. For example, one of the generic beggars in the major cities are an easy choice.

Another popular choice for this is to kill one of the skooma addicts in the Skooma Den of Bravil. If you are going to do this, you should probably murder everyone just to ensure that nobody reports you. No witnesses means no worries!

Once you have murdered an innocent person, you will get a notification that somebody has been observing your actions. It will pop up in the upper left corner of your screen, like this:

When you get this notification, all you need to do now is to simply find any bed and sleep to trigger what comes next. Upon waking up, Lucien Lachance will show up and offer you a spot in the brotherhood.

All you need to do in order to officially be a member is to complete the task he gives you. This is the A Knife in the Dark, which is fairly straightforward. Basically, you need to go to the Inn of Ill Omen and kill a man named Rufio.

He is a defenseless old man who stays at one of the rooms in the inn, and the owners will even tell you exactly where he is. The inn is marked on your map as long as this is set as the active quest, so you cannot get lost.

Kill the old man however way you see fit, and then find another secure bed to sleep in. Funnily enough, the very same bed Rufio was sleeping on can be used for this if you are feeling particularly psychotic.

Once you wake up, Lucien Lachance will pop up once more to congratulate you on a job well done. He will tell you exactly what you need to do next, which is to head to one of the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuaries in Cyrodiil and enter with the given password.

Simply follow the quest marker in Cheydinhal and enter the abandoned house. At the basement, you will find a strange door that asks you the question “What is the color of night?”

The answer is “Sanguine, my brother.” Upon giving that password, you will be granted entry into the sanctuary. From here, all that is left to do is speak with Ocheeva, who will immediately greet you as soon as you load into the area.

Congratulations, you are now officially a member of the Dark Brotherhood and can start taking on contracts from the old vampire here. Speaking of which, this vampire can also turn you into one for free, if you so desire.

If you do this and you want to cure yourself without going through a long quest, we have a guide on how to cure vampirism with no quests in Oblivion Remastered that will help you.
