First of all, it’s important to know what exactly an “Excellent” hit is in this game. You’ll get an “Excellent” anytime you deal massive damage on the last hit of any gathering node. It’s effectively an overkill mechanic, and you get some extra resources per gathering node if you hit it.

With that in mind, there are a few skills you want to learn first of all for all of your Gathering Lives:
- Sweet Spot Search – The first skill you can unlock on the top part of the Skill Board. You can get it once you complete the tutorial quest for your Life and reach the Fledgling Rank.
- Charge Attack I – Found on the leftmost part of the Skill Board, such as Ore Breaker for the Miner Life. Available once you reach Apprentice Rank. You can unlock a second Charge Attack on the rightmost side of the Skill Board later on once you reach Expert Rank with your Life, as well.
- Special Skill – Found on the top part of the Skill Board, such as Bedrock Smash for the Miner Life. You can get this once you reach the Apprentice Rank, but you can also get upgrades for it later in the Skill Board.
Once you have at least the Sweet Spot Search and the first Charge Attack, you can start getting Excellent hits pretty consistently! Let’s go over the exact process now.
Get Those Excellents!
Now that you’re all skilled up, you need to approach a gathering node and start using Sweet Spot Search until you find the sweet spot. You should see 1 of 3 signs over your character depending on your positioning when you use the search skill, as follows:
- White … – The Sweet Spot is on the opposite end of the gathering node.
- Yellow ? – You’re close to the Sweet Spot, move a bit to either the left or right.
- Red !! – You’re right on the Sweet Spot. Start gathering!
Keep in mind that boss nodes, which are marked with crown icons, change their Sweet Spot location after a while. If you see them glow, start searching for the Sweet Spot again. This is especially true for fish, as they can break your line if you continue trying to reel them in!
With the Sweet Spot in your sights, just start gathering with regular “attacks” until the gathering node’s health is nearly depleted. Try to aim for about 10% or so health remaining. Do be careful if you have gathering Buddies with you, though! Try to leave some extra health remaining so that you can properly land the final hit before your Buddy does, in that case.
Either way, use your Charge Attack or Special Skill to deal the finishing blow on the weakened node. It will deal massive damage, guaranteeing an Excellent hit on pretty much every gathering node!
Later in the game, you’ll need to mix up your Charge Attacks and Special Skills to buff yourself before the final blow. Nonetheless, the basic process remains the same: lower the health and use a powerful attack on the final blow!
Remember to Upgrade Your Gear
If you still find it hard to get Excellent hits every time in Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time, make sure to stay on top of upgrading your equipment. Get better pickaxes for the Miner Life, for example, and you’ll deal more damage per hit. This doesn’t just make it faster to break nodes, it also makes it easier to deal the overkill damage for Excellent results!
Similarly, it’s a good idea to get all the proficiency stat nodes in the Skill Boards if you find yourself unable to get better equipment. These nodes are on the rightmost quarter of the Skill Board. For example, Fishing+ for the Angler Life. They aren’t quite as substantial as getting a higher tier of gathering equipment, but don’t ignore them.
